Omnibus/OHC Graphic Novel Collectors discussion

What have you added to your collection recently?

I've got the tpb version, but I believe Brubaker is moving all his Marvel/Icon books -- Criminal and Incognito -- to Image, so hopefully an Image printing of Incognito will turn up soon... as well as the Criminal OHC's, for those who don't have them. Some of the best HC's Marvel's ever made (via Icon), but they're in limbo for the moment, and prices are ridiculous.
I really like the Parker books, Blindzider, and want to get the deluxe oversized Omnibus collecting the first couple books, but held off for the same reason Relstuart is holding off on Saga... the second Omnibus will take awhile to show up.
As for Saga, Relstuart, the wait shouldn't be that long now; it is 18 issues, over 500 pages (like Hawkeye, but better, and 1/3 the price... Yes, I've beat the point to death); but they're up to issue 34 already, and Volume 5 was released a while ago, so the last TPB to be collected in the HC should be out in a few months, and the next deluxe HC should be out late in 2016.
Actually, what am I saying? You'd know better than I when it'll turn up. :-)
As for all the stuff about Hawkeye and his wife, that sorts things out a bit, story-wise. Good memory. :-) Sorry if it was annoying, I was just joking around, busting fictional balls. I was trying and failing to be funny. :-P
Just comparing the Planetary omnibus -- which I love -- with the Hawkeye omnibus... it's 300 pages longer, better paper, better cover materials -- thanks for not using the black particle board with uninked stamp labelling, DC -- and yet again... 60$ CAD for Planetary; and 90$ CAD for Hawkeye. Crazy.

I got the East of West book too...."
Those are all excellent books. Hickman seems to do his own stories best, though I've heard his Fantastic Four run is great.
That's the first I've heard someone praise Dragotta's art on East of West, and I completely agree... the artwork was the main appeal for me.
I find the books I buy now are the one's that blow me away artistically; if the story is amazing but the art is mediocre, I read the digital version. The PunisherMAX by Aaron and Dillon is a good example -- loved the story, especially the second arc with Bullseye, but the art kind of sucks... not a Dillon fan.
I completely concur with your points on Marvel overcharging for Hawkeye. If they are going to charge that amount I would like to see better paper. But, they seemed to feel they would get the money at that price point. It would be really interesting to see the numbers and profit margins on these types of things. I suspect the margin is pretty healthy. Especially as people are still making a profit selling them at 50% off release week. I suspect the downward trend of the Canadian dollar right now doesn't help anything at all for you either. :/
Fear Agent is one of the best bang for your buck deals out there in terms of content and format to price.
Do you have all three of the Blacksad books? I still need to pick up the third one.

I'm hoping they'll gather up another three-volume omnibus after the sixth comes out, and then a 9 x 12 omnibus collecting all six... but that's a year away, at least.
And yeah, the CAD sucks right now; that's why Instocktrades didn't wind up being cheaper, with International shipping prices. Amazon.ca and The Book Depository have free shipping -- the latter ships free around the world, which is cool.
Ironically, the US Amazon wanted 90$ USD for Hawkeye, just 10% lower than cover-price; I paid 87$ CAD, or 62$ USD... jeebus... that is terrible. That's a huge discrepancy in pricing, considering that's from Amazon itself in both cases, and not marketplace sellers. And that's still the price on both sites...
It seems like now Amazon has crippled small bookstores and comicshops the prices are going up; no more 45% discounts on everything... now it's 27 %, and getting worse.
One decent price thing Marvel is doing is Superior Foes of Spiderman omnibus. Cover price of $50 for just under 400 pages means it's a slim omnibus but that is a really reasonable price at 50% off ($25). Which also verifies they can charge less for some of their other books....

As far as beautifully designed hardcovers go, I can't say enough about this one:

I haven't got far into it, but it's one of the most popular and revered Argentinian comics out there, from the late fifties/sixties, and became a hit across Europe. The artwork is excellent, very much a fifties-style, with elements that remind me of Alex Raymond's 'Rip Kirby' period, Wally Wood, and even Kirby, a little bit.
The cover photo shows the book in it's slipcase; out of the case, it has a thick, clear plastic dust-jacket. The cover is metallic silver, with Steranko type black waves; there's a die-cut porthole with matching hole on the slipcase, so you're looking through the transparent plastic that mimics the Eternaut's helmet, through the thick cover to an end-paper portrait of him without the mask on an orange background, giving it an almost 3-D feel. Nice. Now all it has to do is not completely suck. :-P
Here's some photos I borrowed from Google:

It's also a generous size -- 12" x 9" landscape format, 360+ pages. At 30$ USD, that's a great price. DC would have charged 80$, and Marvel would have required 100$ and a kidney. :-) No, they're not that bad, most of the time.
Fantagraphics can make some really beautiful books; 'The Blighted Eye' had a 100$ pricetag, but it was well worth it.
That looks really nice. And, as you say the price is nice too. Looking forward to hearing your review of the writing. :)

Yep. Emma Rios' art made it well worth the time for me, but the writing's a bit pretentious and slow. The second arc might have a better pace, but I haven't got around to reading the latest issues.

It sounds like the second arc may be set in WWI as it talks about a character in the trenches in France. That does makes me curious about the story.

That is a ridiculously awesome haul!

@Jesse - ridiculous yes
@Alastair - I am looking forward to Chew, I am trying to get squared away with all the X-Men in order to do a read.
@Rel - I have so much on my TBR , I'm wondering when I will get to all these.
Guys when I asked for help only last June, I never realized what this would turn into, as I look at my shelves. It started with asking about the cosmic books of GOG and morphed into putting together a complete run of Omni's and HC's of the cosmic arcs.
Then it was off to the super heroes, and then you turned me on to Image, Vertigo, Dark Horse, and I set off in another direction.
But really enjoying this, and I want to say thanks to all of you for the education, discussions and camaraderie in collecting these Omni's , OHC's etc.
Well, I went ahead and ordered:
Captain America: White
Blacksad
Thor v2 by Aaron
Thought I would be ordering the Neal Adams Batman Omnibus but looks like that's been delayed.

The Thor Aaron's are only in two OHC correct? Is there any talk of a Omni being released?
I keep hearing about Blacksad, is it that good?? I have also topyed with picking up Invincible DLX HC's, what does everyone think about that series?
@Relstuart-bummer I've had one or two shipments from them do the same thing.
@Frank-great googly moogly! I don't think there's anything left to buy!?! Enjoy it. Lots of good stuff.
Correct, Aaron's Thor only has the two OHCs. They did just announce the third OHC though. Nothing on an Omnibus though.
Criminal will be worth the wait. I'm slowly picking up the Invicible HCs but haven't read any yet.
No FF Omnibus V3 by Lee?

Blacksad is considered by french fans to be the best French-belgium comic of the last 15 years ( I know the authors are spanish, but it's still a FB comic), so yes it's definitly worth the wait.
The first 2 stories are AMAZING.
I want to grab Criminal DLX but I don't want to pay crazy prices for it so I am hoping for a new DLX edition from Images comics..
I have a cheapgraphic novel order that should come in today with the following :
Uncanny X-men Omni Vol 3
Goon Library edition vol 2
Fade Out Tp vol 3.

The Invincibles are fairly cheap at IST, I think I will pick up a few to start.
@Aildiin - Blacksad, well here goes another series to go after, LOL.
I picked up the Criminal set for $100, not sure if i overpaid a bit, but I have seen some much higher prices and thought I would pull the trigger.
Uncanny X_men 3 and Goon 2, are nice books.
I am hoping that Fade Out gets put into a DLX HC, I have held off so far. Also, hoping for Velvet in a DLX HC as well.

I have to chime in and agree on Blacksad. The classic Hammett and Chandler-style story-telling is excellent throughout the entire 5-album (and counting) series. There's a French edition collecting all 5 into an oversized 'Integrale' (omnibus) hardcover edition I'll be picking up soon, in a larger, 9.5" x 12.5" format. This is one series I want reproduced as large as possible, to appreciate Juanjo Guarnido's painted artwork. He's one of the best artists to ever work in comics... top 5, IMO.
@Frank: I'd wager decent money that The Fade Out and Velvet will both be appearing in a Deluxe edition to match Fatale.
And -- 100$ for both volumes of Criminal is an excellent deal... it was first published by 'Icon', Marvel's creator-owned, mature readers line, sort of like what 'Vertigo' is to DC. Or it was. Now Brubaker and Phillips, etc. are moving their titles to Image, where deluxe editions of Criminal will turn up soon. For now, Criminal is OOP, and I've seen people marking it up to ridiculous prices, 3-400$ each. So... yeah. 50$ each is excellent. :-)
Frank, I join you in your hopes for The Fade Out and Velvet HCs. I think they are only a matter of time. Not sure where things are at with Velvet being completed? (Issue 15 is scheduled for release in May). I believe Fade Out is finished so I hope we see a solicit for an HC collection toward the end of the year.

What some people don't realize is that almost every european comic translated to the US is actually shrunk down to the smaller american formats. Which is why I almost always buy the french edition, I can't stand the smaller art. It's ok for comics where it is the original format, but shrunken art sucks...

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I have so many French language albums... along with the fact that there's thousands of brilliant BD albums that haven't been translated. The 'Donjon' series is a good example, especially the 'Donjon: Monsters' volumes illustrated by Killoffer, Blutch and Blanquet -- they look spectacular in the original 9" x 12" 48-page albums, but the English editions are reduced by 50% -- a 6" x 9" format that's far too small to appreciate the details.
The Dark Horse editions of Blacksad aren't reduced too much, thankfully, going with a 8.5" x 11.25" HC format, but I'd love to see an Artist's Edition reproducing Guarnido's original art with painted colors at full size. The same goes for Ladronn, Moebius, Geof Darrow, Milo Manara, Vittorio Giardino...

Those artist edition sometime exist but they are always subscription based and in practice only sold on the french market. The way it works depending on the album and the artist they cost from 100 to 200$, are numbered ( we're talking very small runs like 150 copies or so, more for big names like Guarnido) and usually sold out before the release date. I don't buy those but I know people that do. There are a bunch of special editors that specialize in those.

Thanks for the heads up, Aildiin, I'll be on the lookout, now. If you ever come across a site doing pre-orders for something like that, or one that's done them in the past, I'd always welcome the info. For now, that gives me something interesting to check out. I've seen something like that for Francois Schuiten's 'Les Cites Obscure', a huge oversized edition; and Humanoids publish those ultra-deluxe 12" x 16" books, but charge ridiculous amounts -- 600$, I think was the price for Final Incal's ultra luxe edition.

11.8" x 15.7"
104 pages (whole story in finished painted art, + a bunch of research painting)
130 euros, 800 limited copies signed edition.
That web site ships to the US I order most of my new french comics from there.
They have a lot of those special artist editions..
PS : Since this was a huge run ( 800 is a lot for those books , that explains why this one isn't sold out yet). You might be able to find some copies in Quebec, I know there are a few stores selling french bandes dessinees in Montreal.

Much appreciated, Aildiin! That was exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for, and exactly the kinds of editions. They've also got copies of the third volume in Spanish, and as you said, a really nice selection of 'tirage de luxe'. I think it'll make a nice alternative to amazon.fr/amazon.ca for BD. Thanks again. :-)
I'm going to put this here for now, and maybe consider a universal announcement thread but there might be a delay of some books:
Below is the information directly from TOW/IST:
We did receive this advisory from Diamond regarding this week’s shipment:
“A truck carrying Diamond product from the Plattsburgh Distribution Center to the Olive Branch Distribution Center was involved in a serious accident that will delay some customer shipments of product on sale February 24. The driver was unhurt.”
Most affected books are being replaced later THIS week. However, one affected book was Marvel Masterworks Champions Vol. 1 DM Variant HC(#229). Limited replacement copies have been confirmed by Diamond for NEXT week. Those copies plus copies we have on hand will be enough to cover Tales of Wonder preorders and will leave a few copies for InStockTrades. In the meantime, the item is no longer available for additional orders on the Tales of Wonder site and will be available only for limited orders on InStockTrades. Those extra copies for InStockTrades will likely sell out on Tuesday. If any copies from the accident are salvageable, copies will then be available again on both Tales of Wonder and InStockTrades.

Good info Blindzider. The DM variant of Champions is still available on IST if anyone wants one. I've never tried to pick up the variants on these. I was thinking about picking up Champions but $40 was a turn off.

I recently bought the singles so I wasn't too interested, but the price turned me off as well, although you are getting a few more issues than a normal MMW I believe.

Totally worth picking up. The best thing by Remender I've read. The only thing that may be better is his work on Uncanny X-Force (it hard to judge his several ongoing series in comparison to a completed story). I do recommend reading both volumes pretty close together. I was ho-hum about it after the first book but the second one brought a lot of threads I didn't realize Remender was building together in some fun ways.

I'm from Colombia and I've been collecting comics for like a year ago. My favorite place to order is IST and Cheapgraphicnovels, but for shipping reasons is pretty difficult to me order Oversized hard covers (which is the way that prefer to collect them). I've managed to order some stuff from time to time but I have to pick the stuff that I want very carefully because I only order like 4 or 5 times a year.
So I hope that with your recommendations I'll be able to expand my knowledge and pick more carefully :)
Thanks and sorry if I wrote something wrong, my english isn't the best. (Thats another thing I hope to improve here ha ha)

So far I'm kind of a Vertigo fan but I would like to check out some Marvel tittles , there are some cool characters that i definitely want to check out.
I own only 2 omnis from marvel right now (FM Daredevil and Ultimate Spiderman) and I'm planning to get the Amazing Spiderman omni. Which other Omnibi do you recommend me to get? Also, do you guys know if the MMW Silver Surfer Vol 1 and 2 are any good? from what i've read, its something that looks interesting to me.
Thanks!

Well, that is a difficult thing to answer because it depends a little on what you prefer as far as writing: classic "Stan Lee" which is very distinctive in how much it tells the reader via captions, or modern storytelling which is very decompressed with only character dialogue and actions.
If you want to read more Marvel, I would start with the original material first: Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus V1, Uncanny X-Men V1 and probably Fantastic Four V1 and Captain America V1. I think all of those are being reprinted in the next couple of months so now is a good time to grab a copy. If there are specific characters you are interested in, it may be easier to narrow down the list of good stories for you.
For more modern stories: FF by Byrne and separately by Hickman, Daredevil by Bendis and separately by Brubaker, Captain America by Brubaker, Aaron's Thor, for starters.
MMW Silver Surfer V1 and 2 (also collected in Silver Surfer Omnibus): I have not read that and would love to. From what I know, it's a good story and SS is not really a hero in it, but most importantly, the story did not get finished. I believe the title was cancelled before it could be concluded. When SS did get a new series I think the original story was never brought up again. Personally I'm hoping for a reprint of the omnibus.
Hope that helps, and if you list out some specific characters or writer/artists and we can recommend more.

Thanku very much! I'm planning to start with Amazing Spiderman V1 and Uncanny X-men v1 when the reprint comes out. As for the modern series i'd love to grab the Bendis Daredevil and Brubaker Captain America but sadly they are OOP right now, so i'll have to wait for a reprint for those.
The writers that i'd like so far are Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker, Frank Miller, Matt Fraction, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis.
And the characters from marvel that i'm interesting to check out are , Dr Strange (excited for the Omnibus announcement), Silver Surfer, X-men and Spiderman.
No problem! Looks like we have similar tastes in writers.
Fraction's Hawkeye is very good. That omnibus just came out but you may want to compare prices with the two deluxe HCs vs the Omnibus.
Ellis' Planetary is one of my favorite books. The first Volume of Authority was good as well.
Morrison is certainly acquired taste and I don't like everything he's done. The omnibus with his version of New X-Men is being reprinted soon.
I'm waiting for a reprint of Brubaker Cap as well (although I've read them already) and I'm excited about the Dr. Strange Omnibus too.

Here's another "general announcement" message:
From Bleeding Cool news looks like Marvel is finally going to start offering more of their out of print backlist titles:
From Bleeding Cool news looks like Marvel is finally going to start offering more of their out of print backlist titles:
Marvel’s Greatest Collection Previews is an attempt to shine a light on some of Marvel’s backlist, their collection of previews in paperback and hardcover for the bookshelves.
In recent years, Marvel has taken their eye of the ball regarding this market. As DC Comics have pushed their backlist, Marvel have deliberately let swathes of their library go out of print to avoid warehousing fees. And have seen DC Comics – and indeed, Image, Dark Horse, Boom, IDW and more overtake them in collection sales, taking advantage of the long tail market. And DC Comics are into their third year of issuing catalogues listing all their best selling collections.
Well, someone at Marvel has decided enough is enough. All comic book stores will receive the Marvel’s Greatest Collections Previews, detailing, collating and compiling all manner of collections of Marvel’s trade paperbacks, most likely weighted towards upcoming films such as Civil War and Doctor Strange and TV shows such as Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
I don't really know what the Collection Previews thing means. Will they be bringing more out of print collections back into print or just having bigger amounts of a book backlog sitting around?
I know DC has a bunch of books that are out of print so I don't really think this means we will be seeing every out of print Marvel book come back. Nor do I think that would be a good business decision for Marvel.

I read your rant on Hawkeye. :) I think Blindzider bought the OHCs instead as they ended up being the cheaper option. I bought my copy of the omnibus from InStockTrades for half off cover so it wasn't quite as bad as the Amazon price. Punisher Max by Jason Aaron is another one whose content to price ratio is pretty high. But the story is really well done. I do think you conflated the movie verse/comic verse with your comments about Hawkeye's wife/farm. I actually really liked that part of the Avengers movie and providing a breathing space in the story and showing a softer family side of the characters but it's not where the comic book writers have gone. There was a Hawkeye Mockingbird Avengers mini-series where Mocking Bird comes back from being a prisoner of the Skrulls after we beat them in Secret Invasion and the two of them team up and discuss their relationship. I thought they were giving things another go there and I have no idea what happened to get them to divorce. Probably an editorial decision that makes the character more interesting/attractive as unmarried to new fans?
