I have a public Amazon wish list that all the family can see. It's very helpful in letting them know what I really want.

Yeah, I have a few family members that like to do that as well. What a strange concept!?! LOL

I e-mailed a word document of books to family with books listed I want. I around 40 books on the list so their was a wide variety in cost and subject. No comic/graphic novels this year but I did get 3 books off the list for Christmas. One of them a $60 biography of a WWI ace I've been wanting for a while. =)

I did just order a second copy of the Return of the Winter Soldier omnibus for my brother for his January birthday. I'm behind in buying comic releases for myself. That Lantern/Arrow Absolute looks good.

I should do the same.

On the Lantern Absolute, does it repeat anything from the Lantern Omnibi that are already published?

It shouldn't from the Johns omnibus stuff. I don't have any other Lantern omnibus volumes. I looked at the two silver age Green Lantern omnibus editions and it doesn't appear to contain content from Neal Adams or Denny O'Neil, the creators for the content in the Absolute. So it looks like this content is Absolute only for hardcover options.

I've ordered Lemire's Green Arrow Deluxe, the All New-X-Men OHC 3, and Simonson's Ragnarok vol 1 HC. First order of the new year. :)

I'll be curious to hear about the GA book. While not my favorite hero, I wouldn't mind reading a good GA book.

Cool. I'll be sure to review it. I really liked the two things I've read by Lemire so far.

I've liked Descender the best though Sweet Tooth was interesting as well. I've not read anything else he has written. I'm going to check out his Old Man Logan. He is also announced as the writer for Hawkeye and a forthcoming Moon Knight title along with Extraordinary X-Men.

I'll be curious to see what you think of JLA.

Thanks.
Can the Morrison JLA editions be read as a stand alone story?

message 669: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I recall that being true. There is the DC One Million crossover but I think that is V2 or 3. It's been awhile since I read it though.

message 670: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
I have the Morrison JLA DLX editions and they read as a stand alone run pretty well.

I'm a bit sad that Hawkman has not seen a volume 2 omnibus solicited. I remember liking the omnibus though it didn't blow me away or anything.

Nice pick up on the Simonson omnibus. =) I may have to pick up a reprint copy of the Superman Death and Return omnibus as well.

message 671: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments Great I am awaiting the other volumes of JLA DLX.

Just got in:
Spiderman Omnibus Vol. 1
Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 1

message 672: by Aildiin (last edited Jan 12, 2016 08:40AM) (new)

Aildiin | 130 comments One thing to know about the JLA by Morrison is that the content of the hardcovers is different from the one of the softcover, especially for the 4th volume which includes the Earth 2 graphic novel in the hardcover edition instead of JLA 42-46 that are in the softcover ( those were written by Mark Waid, not Morison).

This makes me prefer the hardcover by far but created an issue when I bought JLA volume 5 ( from 5 onwards it's only softcovers and no longer Morison). There is a 5 issues gap betwen JLA deluxe volume 4 hardcover and JLA deluxe volume 5 softcover....

Otherwise to answer your original question. The run can be read in itself but it's recommended to read Final Crisis after the JLA run by Morison as it leads into it.

I got the East of West book too.
I already had the single issues but the art is so good I double dipped ( I hate rereading single issues).

Jesse A (jaathey) | 332 comments I had the first 3 trades but decided the deluxe was better for my shelves.

I still need to pick up a copy of the Saga HC at some point. I haven't been in a hurry since I know there is going to be a large gap in-between editions.

Does the Waid DD story get significantly better after the first OHC? After coming off Bendis and Brubaker Waid's DD was simple and a bit too happy.

I'm thinking of picking up GOTG OHC 2, Lazarus HC 1, and Daredevil The End or Waid's DD OHC 2 for my next order.

I hope you got a great deal on The Crossing because it's pretty poor writing. And sometimes the art is also pretty bad. I have a copy (I think I paid $30).

Dark Avengers was actually pretty interesting I thought. Do you have all three of the Johns Flash omnibus volumes now? I have them but have only read the first two.

I just ordered Blacksad: A Silent Hell. The second book of the three that is out.

And I am super pumped to hear two of my custom binds are complete. They might get here by next week.

The first part of Johns' Flash is at my library. I'm going to give that a shot before I try getting the Omnibus.

Rel, you still have more custom binds?!

Blindzider wrote: "Rel, you still have more custom binds?!"

Yeah, I'm getting the Diggle Daredevil/Shadowlands run bound and a Winter Solider bind. The last Brubaker Captain America omnibus has the first dozen issues of the first Winter Soldier run in his own title. I have the rest of that run (21 or 22 issues), the Remender Winter Kills mini series and then the second Winter Soldier run with beautiful Marco Rudy art. It's looking pretty unlikely to get an OHC which is sad because I would love to buy that Rudy art on oversize pages.

I actually have several other binds planned. I have two Avengers binds about ready to go. Avengers Academy and Avengers Arena/Undercover. I got the issues pretty cheap.

Yup. $30, how did you guess, picked up Dark Avengers for $24, I am missing Volume 2 of Flash, will pick it up soon.
Blacksad - once again you have given me another one to think about!!
Cool on the private bindings, love to see some shots of them.

Ragnarock HC Vol. 1

message 684: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Wow Frank! Quite a haul. Are the two Absolutes a first time read for you?

message 685: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments Thanks, guys.
Rel ordered Ragnarock from your recommendation, book wasn't too expensive, though to give it a try.
I am putting together a Batman run to eventually read starting with Year One and covering all the good story arcs going forward. Have the Miller DLX edition of the Dark Knight stories, will do some filling in.
I have not read any of these stories, yet thought II'll read them thru.
I feel I have so many omni's I'll never get to read all of them, LOL.

message 686: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
Neat to hear you are checking out Ragnarock too. Hope you like it. :)

I usually try to buy only HC versions of the stories I really like. For Batman, the Knightfall story was one of the better 90s long stories I've seen. Sadly, it's only available in paperback. There are three volumes. They did a recent updated printing with more companion issues. I have the older printing so can't comment on the additional content other than to say I've seen some comments that the extra stuff didn't add a lot to the overall story. This run would be my first pick for future Batman omnibus volumes.

Adding to what Rel said about Knightfall, I personally liked No Mans Land.

Frank, don't forget about Batman:hush. They have an absolute for that.

message 689: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments Thanks guys, I saw that Absolute Hush, debating getting it. It's a shame about Knightfall being a ppbk, they should really do an omni of that.

message 690: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
I echo Blindziders's recommendation of Hush. I love the art and enjoyed the story. It was the first Absolute I bought and I've re-read it several times.

message 691: by Aildiin (new)

Aildiin | 130 comments Personally I find Knightfall to be very dated.
I have read the 3 newTPB in digital edition and the whole Jean Paul thingy bore me to death....

Otherwise if you want a reading order for modern Batman, there is a fairly complete one here :

Message sent.

There are a ton of books coming out next week. I am probably most anticipating the Image comics Black Science HC. But Marvel has a lot of stuff too. I want those X-Men and Avengers OHCs.
02/03/16 - Daredevil by Waid OHC vol 4
02/03/16 - Giant Size Little Marvel AvX by Skottie Young OHC
02/03/16 - Uncanny Foes of Spider-Man omnibus
02/03/16 - Uncanny X-Men by Bendis OHC vol 1
02/03/16 - Avengers OHC vol 3 by Hickman
02/03/16 - Superman Secret Identity DLX
02/03/16 - The Goon Library Edition volume 2

message 697: by Jesse (new)

Jesse A (jaathey) | 332 comments Man, I might need to order that Secret Identity Deluxe! Great story. Would be nice to replace my TPB.

I'm probably most excited about Black Science then I'll pick up UXM V3.

message 699: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments I finally picked up the Saga Deluxe HC (though I had the tpb's), Sandman: Overture, the Planetary Omnibus, and the Hawkeye by Fraction and Aja Omnibus. Very nice... mostly.

Also: The Eternaut, dlx OHC w/slipcace, from Fantagraphics

I just got the second Fatale dlx OHC, and I'm liking my Crime Comic Shelf:
Fatale dlx OHC Vol. 1-2;
Criminal dlx OHC Vol. 1-2;
Big Damn Sin City;
100 Bullets Vol. 1-5 OHC's; the dlx OHC editions of
Stray Bullets Vol. 1-3 dlx OHC, and the Stray Bullets Omnibus; Blacksad HC Omnibus & 2 OHC Volumes;
The Complete Torpedo Vol. 1-5 OHC;
District 14: Season 1 & 2 Omnibus Editions
Richard Stark's Parker Volumes 1-4 by Darwyn Cooke.

I'd like to find a copy of Incognito: The Classified edition OHC, but it's hard to get.

As for the Hawkeye Omnibus, it's very cool, but it's also one of the most ridiculously over-priced In Print books ever made. It costs 23$ more than Big Damn Sin City, is more than both of the Fear Agent Omnibus volumes put together, and a couple dollars higher than Absolute Top 10, even though it, like all of these books, is much nicer.

Here's the whole review plus rant:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also got some incredible underground signed limited edition stuff that few people are into:
'In the Garden of Evil' by Charles Burns and Killoffer,
UDWFG: Vols. 1.2 and 3
UDWFG: Shintaro Kago
UDWFG: Paolo Masagli

Nobrow - Vol. 7 and 8
