The Lion's Share I just got vol. 6 of the sixth gun. Is that the last volume?

So good. I thought Brubaker's follow-up run was also excellent.

The Lion's Share Yes brubaker’s follow up is his best super hero run imo

Very nice collection! I always like to see how people group their books. :)

I assume you will finish obtaining Invincible?
I didn't see Absolute Killing Joke.
What other Batman Omnibus do you plan to get?

Like how the Absolute Preachers look like Bibles or classic literature. Someday I may upgrade my LoEG to Absolutes...

message 5556: by Karsten (new)

Karsten Krieg | 129 comments Thanks, Blind. Sure, Invincible will be finished, I got the 12th issue for 10€, thats why it looks a bit lonely next to Vol. 6.
Killing Joke is on there, between Flashpoint and Court of Owls.

I will finish the Knightfall omni series and get the third Morrison omni. Others are not planned yet. Anything I desperately need?

Absolute Editions are my favorite size and format. Am super bummed about DCs recent decisions about Fables and Gotham by Gaslight.

Humanoids has a video of the new HC Slipcase for metabarons. It’s the same as the recent Incal and looks glorious.

Nickviola | 1019 comments It does look like exactly the same build of slipcase only there are 2 books inside this one:

If you are a Spidey fan, have you read Untold Tales of Spider-Man by Busiek? It's a little bit on the kid/young adult side, but it's neat how it weaves between the existing early issues of Amazing Spider-Man. Not the greatest read, but kind of fun (I don't want to set the expectations too high.)

Some... informative quotes from Dan Didio about DCs collected edition decisions.

message 5563: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I don’t read DC and I only have a few of their books (Absolute New Frontier, some vertigo titles) - again not as a diss on DC but I grew up on Marvel and don’t have the bandwidth for more - but this guy being so dismissive of what fans may be interested in is bizarre. You’re telling me people buy 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a series but then don’t buy 5 because it’s a higher number? Obviously no one is going to buy 5 first, but the number isn’t the problem. Look at the Brubaker Cap Omnis, they aren’t numbered but the last 2 sell for cover and first 3 are expensive as F. It’s not because they are numbered - they aren’t - it’s that the first 3 are overpriced due to the publishers fault in the print count or the baseline cover price.

I know nothing about book sales, but sounds like he’s just being dismissive of fans.

message 5564: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Not trying to defend him, because I agree he is dismissive but I think the phenomenon is that a new reader won’t start a series if it’s already 5, 10 volumes in. Not sure how many people they really think that is compared to those who are actually buying it.

I think it’s what it always is: profit. They want a certain margin or are required to by warner bros and can’t make those numbers. So they are going to play it safe.

message 5565: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I guess so, I suppose Marvel sold a lot more copies of Phalanx Covenant than if would have been called X-Men Omni #7 but they could always just put the years a collection starts right, that could look cool on the spine if it was like X-Men: The Phalanx Convenant 1994 so it doesn’t sound quite so serial but fans of collections still have some ordering.

Or include a digital code with the book, so people have it in 2 formats and makes it more attractive.

I don’t know, seems like if he can’t predict sales and is canceling things he needs to get better at his job and be more proactive and less reactive.

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I really don’t know why Dan is still in charge. DC has always been treading water IMO.

Coming this week to comic book shops (and IST).

Conan the Barbarian Orig Marvel Years omnibus vol 3 (two covers)
Incredible Hulk by Peter David omnibus vol 1 (two covers)
Marvel Masterworks Daredevil vol 14
Knights of Sidonia Master Ed TPB vol 4
Morbus Gravis DLX Ed
Solo by Oscar Martin HC

message 5572: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments If you had never read a single Batman comic, know very little DCU history or status quo, but historically like Grant Morrison, what’s the percent enjoyment you’d get out of his omnis?

message 5573: by boymeetscomics (new)

boymeetscomics | 79 comments Not sure if Morrison's Batman is the best starting point for someone new to Batman or DC. I probably suggest Snyder's run.

message 5574: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Looks like specifically the DM Variant Hulk Omnibus is already the #3 seller on IST. I don't know how accurate that top 10 list is really, but may mean that cover is going to sell out for people who care which one they get.

message 5575: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments I bought the PD Hulk Omni DM variant before it was even on the front page. I figured this one would sell out quick. If it’s #3 already I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all gone by the end of the week, if not sooner.

On a related note, it looks like the DM variant of HoXPoX HC is gone as well.

message 5576: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I first got the HOXPOX normal cover hoping maybe future books would share a design, but ultimately got the variant on ebay too. So HOXPOX is now the only book I own both covers on - which I am little embarrassed about - but I love the X-men and really like both cover and I've definitely spent 40 dollars in stupider ways so oh well.

message 5577: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments Hmm, that’s a good point about future volumes matching Nick. Now it makes me want to make HoXPoX the only book I own with both covers, LOL

message 5578: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Hickman is a very organized man - I wouldn't be surprised if he matches all the spines... I assume the variant has a weird spine, but honestly i have only seen the front and back and assume they connect all the way around??

Never feel silly about just doing what you want when it comes to buying books. I almost did the same thing with the LOW DLX Vol 1, because I love the story and art so much I wanted both . . . Didn’t pull the trigger on the other cover though.

message 5580: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Still love LOW. No word on a Deluxe Book Two, right? It would be really nice to complete that, East of West, Deadly Class, and Black Science. Does anyone know where the remainder of those hardcovers stand to finish out the series?

message 5581: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments Woah, my order has already been picked and scanned. That’s the fastest EVER. Looks like IST is burning it up today. Must have some extra bodies in for the Hulk Omni release?

message 5582: by Erik, Moderator (new)

Eastham Erik (erikakasash501) | 851 comments Mod
I think I saw Remender post that LOW 2 would be soon and Black Science final volume for sure. I’m sure Deadly Class Vol 3 is just around the corner as I believe 1&2 did well.

Image has just really slowed down on HC content compared to two years ago.

message 5583: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
I am really looking forward to East of West HC 3, Black Science vol 3, and Low vol 2 hardcovers. I'm hopeful we'll see all of those this year. Black Science HC 3 is scheduled for release on 5 May 19. No solicitation yet on the other two.

I don't expect to see another Deadly Class hardcover this year but would be happy to be wrong (next TPB comes in April ending with issue 44. Last HC ended with issue 31 which means they need to bring out an additional TPB of content that would be contained in the next HC before they would do the hardcover. Assuming that TPB comes out late this year and they space out the hardcover a bit after the paperback that would probably put us into next year).

Lemire's Gideon Falls has a volume 1 hardcover coming this month (in Italian) and in May (in German). No solicitation for an English version yet. The only conclusion this leaves me with is that the comic book scene is so robust in Europe it makes sense to be putting these out there and not as much here at this point?

message 5584: by Karsten (new)

Karsten Krieg | 129 comments Europe is much more used to GN sized comics and generally more willing to pick up a trade or HC once in a while instead of singles.

Serialized comics are put out in a oversized format, normally HC, once or twice a year. See for example Troll of Troy, thats the normal publication mode. So we get a higher prized bigger sized comic and most of the readers I know are pretty fine with it.

Compared with 20+ monthly titles / floppies I also prefer it that way. Image titles are primarily sold through trades / HC here in Germany, also in LCS. Only #1s or successful books like Saga are picked up in singles.

For anyone that ordered the Peter David Hulk Omni, which cover did you get? I ordered the DM variant, but I'm not really happy with the new coloring. Wish it was just the original cover the way it was published.

Similarly, the cover to the John Byrne She-Hulk omni was recolored and revealed. Byrne himself didn't like it and now they've gone back to something closer to the original coloring.

I don’t understand why we must have recolored/retouched covers of anything for an omnibus. Why can’t we just have some of the original artwork, as envisioned, by the artist(s) from the time? Hopefully John Byrne’s voice on the matter was the definitive reason for change, although I’d still like to see what their final version will look like now that they’re using “something closer to the original colouring”. Sucks moose indeed.

To Erik’s earlier comment about Image slowing down, here’s an interesting article where Image has declared they will purposely be putting fewer books out.

I think it’s a good idea, although it just means some of the more off-center ideas will probably never get published.

IDW TMNT Complete Collection HC vol 10
Batman Black and White Omnibus
Buffy Season 11 Library Edition vol 1

Batman Black & White Omni
TMNT HC v10
Transformers HC v1

And I’m really into the cute little First Second hardcover books right now, and will likely be buying a few recommended to me to round out my collection:

PTSD
Pumpkinheads
Stargazing
The Dam Keeper trilogy

That's the same way I feel. If a book is really good there will be room in the market for it.

There are a number of titles I would buy in hardcover if only they published them. God Country by Cates and Birthright are a couple that leap to mind. Very happy we got Descender and Lazarus in hardcover. Hopefully the few that are getting released are selling well so the market encouragement for more is there.

I'm deliberately holding off on those titles in hopes of a HC. I've heard the creators of Birthright have no intentions of ever releasing a HC though, which is a bummer. There is a LCS Day HC of God Country floating around out there, but the price is crazy. I'm hoping they'll notice and issue a new version. *fingers crossed*

Unfortunately the God Country HC is just the TPB in a glued hardcover binding. So it's a standard size book with no real advantage over the TPB for the art size.

Cates' responded to me on Twitter not long after the TPB release that he was interested in an oversized hardcover but I haven't heard anything about that actually happening.

I haven't heard anything about hardcover potential for Birthright.

The Metabarons box set was already released in Europe and some folks have them in hand there.

Humanoids books are generally 25% off on IST. However, limited editions don't always get discounts in part because IST doesn't get much of a discount on them. IST should have the book but not sure about the discount or how many they will have available.
