I think the main character was a boy, but there was also a girl tied in somehow, maybe as a secondary main character. I don't think they were romantically involved. They were probably around twelve years old, and one or both of them had to cross between worlds, or at least large amounts of space in an in-between place filled with mist and possibly having illusions or spectres, it was definitely dangerous, and they had to find bridges. I read this book sometime within the last ten years.

Is it maybe The Magician's Nephew from the Chronicles of Narnia? There is travelling between worlds in the woods in this one.

Thanks, but that's definitely not it. I don't have anything to do with guinea pigs or magic pools tied to the memory of this book.

Also, I think there was some wizard or magician as the boy's mentor, or maybe some mysterious lady similar to the Lady of the Lake.

But the helper or mentor was definitely there for unselfish reasons, unlike the Uncle Andrew in The Magician's Nephew.
