Hi folks. I'm from central Iowa and I write in the rural crime/noir genre. I'm self taught thus far but did take a creative fiction class at the local community college at the age of 73. I'm working through the "write your first novel" class through coursera and MSU and I'm completing chapter four.
I do empathize with people for the lack of meaningful feedback through the course but I am hampered because I do not read YA, chick lit, fantasy or horror and those genres require far too much suspension of disbelief than I am able to wrap my head around.
In addition the grammar and editing in many of the submissions is not very good to be charitable. If the title is misspelled and the first paragraph has a dozen typos what does that say?
A lot of folks do not seem to be aware of the basic mechanics of story telling. That makes their work hard to comment on if it is a stream of consciousness or is larded with cultural references that go stale very quickly.
Remember myspace? Neither do I.
Let's work together.
