Sandra I'm with you. I enjoy hearing everyone's opinions too. DeWinter is the only character in this series who really turned me off (not including the murderers and Magdalena). I know a lot of readers have issues with Peabody, Mavis, etc. I love them all. I cannot explain it but from the minute she threw her coat at Roarke when she came to the crime scene, I didn't care for her. I think it brought back memories of Magdalena performance in their parlor. If Robb decides to develop her more I can change my mind.

I completely understand, Sharon! When a character hits me wrong, it's takes a lot of redeeming to change my mind. I'm not "in love" with DeWinter, but can tolerate her and interested in seeing where Robb may or may not take her character.
One of the things I liked about this one is how dislikable the victim is. That's not always the case.Also, I love where she helps people she likes. Does she do that in every book?

I think her attitude has changed as Eve grows. She sees more of the gray area since she married Roarke.
I think it's always been there Sharon. But yes with Roarke in her life the gray has is not such a dirty word or world anymore.

Michelle - I'm reading (listening) the latest right now. I was thinking of all the people who do the right thing and are going to be out of jobs. Sometimes she gets Roarke to hire them and there's that girl she got Nadine to take on.
How did I forget about Nadine being a mentor! That's is the other think about Eve. She remembers people. And it might take a book or so before she does something.
I am just now finishing Secrets and came here to see what everyone discussed. As always, there are lots of great insights.This is my second read of this book and I am still underwhelmed. Maybe it was the victim was such a nasty person it was hard to have sympathy for her. I think Hyatt was a sick person and his murder of his fellow employee was truly cold hearted. I noticed him more this time around and thought he might be the killer.
DeWinter strikes me as a very competent person but for Eve, it is almost too much like looking in a mirror when she interacts with DeWinter. Kudos to the doctor for figuring out they needed to have a sit down and talk but there is still a tension there which will be fodder for more plots down the road IMHO.
I thought it was a nice thing for Eve to offer Peabody and McNabb time at the villa in Mexico, she really is maturing in her relationship with co-workers Her and Nadine are still jockeying at times but they really do care about each other.
My big beef with Eve was how she kept testing Roarke to see if he was deceiving her. The whole just happened to mention Mars had included Magdalena in her notes on Roarke irked Dallas more than she thought it would. She tries to say it is no big deal, but I bet she made sure she read the rest of the details of Mars' investigation of Roarke after Peabody went in the other room. Then she has to feign nonchalance when she not so subtly brought it up with Roarke. It was too easy for her to say, it doesn't matter because it did. While I don't think it is unrealistic for her to have doubts now and then, it seemed a bit underhanded to try and trip Roarke up. Maybe not a big deal but it annoyed me LOL.
Karen it is interesting that you thought she was trying to trip Roarke up. To me, the whole Magdalena issue hurt Eve deeply. Roarke was so off his game at that time too. He never saw what was going on with Eve, and he reads her perfectly under normal circumstances. The fact that Mars picked up on Magdalena indicates that Roarke was sending off some kind of vibes.
In Secret, Eve knows that Roarke would pick up that something was on her mind. She wanted to let Roarke know about Mars book, but she didn't want to make a big deal of it. It seems realistic to me. I don't see where she is trying to trip Roarke up at all.
