Les Miserables, Sorrows of Young Werther, Brave New World, Hitchhikers Guide, and probably Six of Crows for the more modern book. But ask me in another month and they would be different.
Red Rising series, Phantom by Susan Kay (can't help it, musical theatre fan here), Goth by Otsuichi, Jane Eyre (problematic and all), The Bone Season series.
I am hosting a weekly show in Second Life with contemporary authors but we discuss context a lot as well. draxtor.com/slbookclub if you are interested. I had spoken with Michael a while back about appearing as I am expanding to having authors on from social science fields as we grow. Feel free to stop by and message me in-world. We reach about 3000 viewers every show and have space for 60+ concurrency in-world. A lot of authors are very socially and politically conscious. Coming up a series of CliFi

Douglas Adams Hitchhikers guide books, The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey, A Song of Ice and Fire(game of thrones) books, NK Jemison books, Octavia Butler. Ursula Le Guin (thanks to the show’s recommendations)
I don’t read too much contemporary fiction but my favourite from the last few years would be For the Good Times by David Keenan. Recently read Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and loved it. Think it was published in the 1940s but in many ways it felt like it could easily have been written today. I’d say my favourite authors would be Philip Roth, Kurt Vonnegut, Toni Morrison and Cormac McCarthy.
