** spoiler alert ** This book was one of my favorite thrillers ever! Benson, a teenager with no real family, gets an offer he cannot refuse- Free admission at a private school! However, he does not know the school is one twisted experiment that preys on orphans. Benson has to navigate his way through Maxfield Academy and their "gangs" (Benson joins the variants, hence the name of the book). After discovering his girlfriend is a robot, Benson discovers the school is a twisted experiment to test out the robot interactions with humans. Not sure who he can trust, Benson leads a rebellion to climb the wall of the school, and the book ends on a cliffhanger with Benson finding the camp where former students control their robot counterparts at the school. I would definitely read, this is a great example of a story that is thrilling and suspenseful without being cheesy!
