Jean Robinson | 9 comments This is my first time posting here and I hope I do this right. I am trying to remember/find a short story I read LONG AGO in one of those old sci-fi magazines (the small format ones like Galaxy or Amazing Stories). What I remember is that at the heart of the story there were some sort of Native American spirit creatures that were mostly teeth and I **think** they were call "sin eaters" in English but something that sounded like "teheklas" (all I am reasonably certain of is the initial letter T and even that is in doubt) in their native name. Of course this "lore" may be complete fiction being sci fi. I also remember a bad guy in the desert and a cabin or shack and the creatures came for him from under the floor (again, I think). Sorry it is so vague but it left a distinct imaginary visual memory but I cannot remember the name. Any help would be appreciated.

How many years is long ago?

Pamela Love | 1510 comments Could you be thinking of one of the "Silver John" stories by Manly Wade Wellman? They're set in Appalachia and often feature spirits known to Native Americans. One of the stories, "Till Coster's Burden", was about the custom of sin eating, although a human did that, not a spirit. "Silver John" played a guitar with silver strings. John the Balladeer collects all the short stories. John the Balladeer

Jean Robinson | 9 comments @Lobstergirl: long ago = 1980's but the book (magazine) may have been older than that.

Jean Robinson | 9 comments @Pamela: Sorry, the bit with a guitar definitely does not fit the memory at all. Thanks for the lead on new Native American tales though! :)
