Fiction novel set in colonial (late 1700s, early 1800s) American south (Kentucky, Virginia, Carolinas, Georgia) about a main character named Daniel (Dan'l) , who married a wealthy planter Jane. Daniel had a sister who was an indentured servant, and th the plot was about pioneering through the southeast US in search of land for a homestead. Can't remember the sister's name, but another woman in the story was a Frenchwoman named Sophie who was terrified of snakes. Read this in the 1980s, but the book was published between 1950 and 1970. It was a hardback library book, but I can't remember the author's name or title. Gaahhhh.
