Debates > I’m sure all of us can say we’ve never been to space. But we all live on earth, and earth is in space so technically we’ve all been to space. Right? Lol

αλήθεια I mean technically yes, we're in "space" because that's what we refer to as the universe at large - and we are definitely in the universe. But we've never experienced zero g, so there's that.

PS. I cannot express how much I'd love to go to space someday - so if any of y'all are rich could you buy my space flight ticket (when commercial space travel happens) ? XD

stu (blobmustardsprinkles) | 634 comments I agree, I don't think it's makes sense, but still.

Zara | 245 comments Well, that's one way to put it. We are a part of space and ultimately universe.
When we say space it actually refers to the vacuum outside atmosphere and since we have never been outside the atmosphere of Earth we can say that we have never been to space but considering that our Earth is a part of 'space' or universe or whatnot we are all in space. So I guess it depends on what you think.
P.S. I know I sound crazy lol.

Jennifer | 1 comments Well, not really. It's the "to," which implies that space is a destination. Space, though, is a huge vacuum sparsely filled with stuff. We can visit the stuff (someday), but we can't really say we would visit the part where there isn't, at least without defining where it is we are going. It would be akin to someone saying they were going to Disney World next week, and someone else bragging that they will be going to Interstate 10. If I go to Disney World, I will take Interstate 10, but I will not be going to Interstate 10. I look at "space" in general as the route we will take to other places rather than a place itself. We may go to Mars eventually, and "space" will be the way we take to get there, but it isn't really a place on its own.

BiBookDemon I'm just going to be super wise for absolutely no reason.

Have you heard the saying, 'Everything is relative'? That is one of the main things I go by in life. Relativity is comparisons, and comparisons is how we decide things.

For example: Trees. What defines the tallest tree on Earth? Well, comparing it to other trees. The tallest tree's 'title' is relative to all of the other lengths of the other trees.

So, to answer the question, I don't know. It really depends on how you're comparing it. Someone might compare it in the way that space is practically nothing, whereas the Earth is something. The Earth has mass, space does not. Yet another person might compare how Earth is in space, and therefore is a part of it. (Like the debate title says)

I myself compare how space has no air and the Earth does have air.

Then again, I could compare how Earth's atmosphere touches space, so they're connected and could be considered one and the same.

Angles-They change everything and are a vital part of relativity.

*switching out of wise-mode* Wow. This sounds kinda silly, lol. My general opinion that isn't influenced by relativity: No, we are not a part of space. Sadly.

Seriously though, I live by that statement.
