forsanolim | 526 comments I have a few options, so I'll see what strikes my fancy. I meant to get to Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch a while ago, as it fits for Bingo, but I'll have to be in a sort of special mood for this so we'll see if I get to it. I recently learned about The Familiars, which seems like I might enjoy it, or I might read The Girl in the Tower, the sequel to The Bear and the Nightingale.

I never read it as a kid because it was published when I was 31! But my kids and their friends loved it. I volunteered in a school library and it was very popular. Now I'll find out why. I would have read it then but I was too busy getting by bachelors degree!

BarbaraM - it was originally published in 1958 so I seriously doubt you were 31 when it was published! A new edition was published in 1978 - it may actually have been out of print for while. I was too old for it in 1978 and the copy I read from the public library as a teen in the late 1960s would have been the original edition.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I took a look, and We Ride Upon Sticks sounds interesting! We'll see if I can get my hands on a copy :)

Oh, I saw the wrong date - I was 11! Still, I never read it so I look forward to getting it fit in this month.

message 64: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I just put the book on hold as well. We'll see if I get it in time. If not, I still have Discovery of Witches and Good Omens.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8440 comments Joi wrote: "We Ride Upon Sticks is on for August!"

I'm up to # 9 on the hold list. Looks possible for getting it in Aug, but with every book being "quarantined" for 4-5 days when returned, turn around is SLOW. (And I also quarantine the books I pick up for at least 3 days in the trunk of my car before bringing them in the house.)

message 69: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11108 comments Can anyone tell me which Alice Hoffman books have witches?

I'm particularly interested in:
The worlds that we Knew
The Marriage of Opposites
Everything my mother taught me

Clearly witches:
I might read Practical Magic or Magic Lessons
I already read The Rules of Magic

Any others?

Favorites?

message 70: by Holly R W (last edited Jul 31, 2020 08:38PM) (new)

Holly R W | 3141 comments Nancy, I tried to look up earlier books of Hoffman's which might have witches in them. I had liked her earlier books very much. I read them so long ago, that I can't clearly remember them. In reading the GR blurbs on them, I really couldn't discern which ones are about witches. I did see that Blackbird House has a chapter called "The Witch of Truro".

She herself has said that her books are like fairy tales for adults. They certainly have elements of magical realism in them. I remember characters that seemed to have witch-like powers, but may not be identified as such.

I'll be interested to see what you ultimately select for the tag.

Holly R W | 3141 comments Count me in for the buddy read of We Ride Upon Sticks. It will be fun!

Amy | 12953 comments Me too! This is going to be a fun Buddy Read!

message 74: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2601 comments Not available in my library system at all. However, my granddaughter can get it for me from her library's Overdrive system. There's a waiting list though that might take as long as 4 weeks so it's not looking good for me to join you. That's OK though, I have some good books to read for this tag anyway.

message 75: by Sue (new)

Sue | 2733 comments I'm on a waiting list at my library for We Ride Upon Sticks, so I'll join in if I get the book in time.

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Theresa wrote: "Not sure where to put this but just have to say I love the theme banner this month!"

Anna found a few good ones to choose between for this one. The one we went with was one of my favourites. :-)

message 78: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Yay for everyone who is reading We Ride Upon Sticks! I hope to start it later this week.

When I am back a little later this week, I will open up a buddy read thread for it so we can chat about it there if we want. I have about 30 more seconds of online time before I have to do something else so I cannot do it right now.

If someone else wants to start it sooner, please feel free to do so! I am looking forward to reading and discussing it!!

message 79: by DianeMP (new)

DianeMP | 534 comments For this month's tag, I'm going Witches-lite. Thought I'd start with Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen and then move on to the remainder of Joanna Harris series Chocolate. I have Peaches for Fr.
Francis and The Strawberry Thief on order from Amazon.

If you are looking for a little magical realism in your reading look no farther than The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen.

message 82: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11108 comments Can anyone suggest a 1973 book for the Witches tag?

message 83: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments I’m reading the Princess Bride for 1973. Starting it tonight. I’ve never read it. Does anyone know if it has a witch or witches?

Not that I remember ...

Yes, The Princess Bride is tagged witches on page 16 third column middle https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve... by 5 people. It's also tagged Hollywood, comedy, politics, and nature.

message 86: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Don’t we all just love Anna?

message 87: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Actually I was going to ask on our purple Sage thread, for someone to remind me since I knew someone had already looked for me about what tags Princess bride held. But I was actually going to look before asking. To see if I could find it. You saved me a trip! So unless there’s a new state for me in there, I’ll let you guys pick which one I post it as. Or if Nancy decides to read it or reread it, you can have us put it in a different state entirely if you like.

message 88: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3155 comments Amy wrote: "Don’t we all just love Anna?"

YES! She is a rock star at finding tags!!

message 89: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments LOL you should probably just search my personal individual planning thread first in the RPS group before you post a question. Though some of the links may have shifted if it's been some time since I did the search, usually they're in nearby pages, easily checked.

Yes, it does. Only read the book once, but thinking of the movie, wasn't Billy Crystal and his wife - what was the actresses name? (ETA: Looked it up: Carol Kane) - or his wife, anyway. Wasn't she a witch?

ETA (again): "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife!"

message 93: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11108 comments Thanks, Princess Bride would work for the monthly tag and Bingo 1973. I saw the movie this year, so I'd prefer to wait a while to read it. Otherwise my left? brain will focus too much on making comparisons, rather than just enjoying it. I don't need a witches tag for poll ballot.

Buddy Reads go in Footnotes Meli-

message 96: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Since we love getting technical these days, I might add that next year, Christmas in July should go in Footnotes too. That’s where the unofficial Trim challenge lives.

message 98: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments These are all easily moveable! I saw that you started it in Footnotes, which is where we prefer these discussions to go, but if you put it someplace else absolutely no worries!
