Samuel Fyres | 2 comments I remember this book from back when I was maybe 13 or so, so about 10 years ago. The book begins with a girl in her home, and she describes things about her life, including her elderly nanny who she mentions smokes a lot. Later, something happens to her parents, and the nanny, who reveals herself to be one of these wingless dragons, takes the girl back to her world, mentioning something about a horrible creature who's specific name I can't remember. The nanny dies fairly quickly, and the girl joins up with the nanny's relative(?), a male dragon who hasn't yet gotten his fire, and so can't fly. They're separated eventually, and the girl is taken in by fairies(or elves, I can't remember). They also mention this creature the nanny had. Turns out though, that the name of this creature isn't it's name at all. The word just means enemy. The dragons are talking about the fairies, and the fairies are talking about the dragons when they use the word. I think at the end, the dragon finds her and a fairy she had befriended, and it ended on a cliffhanger so it was definitely the first in a series.

Rainbowheart | 28692 comments How old is the girl, teenager or younger child?

Is the nanny an actual nanny, or another name for the girl's grandmother?

Samuel Fyres | 2 comments I think she was a preteen, and the nanny was actually a nanny and had no relation as far as I remember @Rainbowheart

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments This sounds like Beyond the Dragon Portal by Melissa Glen Haber - you can see the wingless dragons on the cover. There's a copy on archive.org and I found the part with the 'enemy' word realisation:
A sick, miserable certainty fell over her like a net. “Picker,” she whispered. “Do you think it’s possible Barbazion just means "enemy’? Could it be possible that the Lalawani could be the Barbazion for the Dragons, and that the Dragons could be the Barbazion for the Lalawani?”
