In light of the Richard discussion in the Anita Blake series, this made me want to discuss all of those characters we just love to hate in the books we read!

So tell me:

What characters do you absolutely HATE? Why?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I can think of books I hated, but can't think of particular characters I hated in a book I liked.

For me the BIG one is Richard, from the Anita Blake series.

He has gotten SO damn annoying that any time he is in a scene I want to put the book down or throw it, LOL.

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments Ditto Richard. Can't think of others right now, but I'm sure there are some.

I am sure some of you will want to slap me for this next one but Bones from the Night Huntress series is starting to piss me off..

I don't mind Alpha males usually but Bones in the most recent NH book bothered me so bad with his shit that I almost threw the book across the room!

So he is up there on my hate list atm, at least until I read the next one (whenever it comes out) and he can redeem himself lol

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Kiyo in Thorn Queen. I just, ugh, wanted to beat his head in. Despicable behaviour. But he raised the kind of ire in me that a character should. Lots of shock and dismay rolled through me, followed by an overwhelming urge to pull him out of the book and smack him repeatedly. Though I hate him now, it was a great turning point in the book.

Tory. From Acheron. Her I just straight up dislike, in that I think her character is useless and ill-fitting to the story. Rude, arrogant, judgmental...and her later behaviour is completely contradictory in light of how she's initially described. She is the only one of Kenyon's many heroines who I felt was a failure, and I did not understand the HEA. Every other gal she's written I've loved.

Sarah | 276 comments Ooh, and Anya from the Lords of the Underworld series. From her teenage tramp outfits and lollipops to her whiny attitude, I just want to slap her and yell "You're a goddess, grow up!"

message 8: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Lol. That's funny, since Anya is the only part of that series I really liked!

message 9: by Yz the Whyz (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 232 comments I have to admit I enjoyed Anya's antics, too...LOL.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments I dunno, she was just... too much for me, you know? Too over the top. Glad you guys like her though. :)

message 11: by ♦Jennifer♦ (new)

♦Jennifer♦ (thejenneral) | 83 comments Richard from the Anita Blake series is def. one of the top characters that I really hate. Right now I'm reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and Lash is a serious a-hole inside and out. So I'll add him to the list.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 168 comments Zoey Redbird from the House of Night YA series. I find her holier than though and judgmental - and she drives me batty. Oh and the fact that she can happily collect a harem of males for her bed, but can't utter a harsher word than fiddlesticks or something like that - yeah, not believable.

I read the series for the rest of the characters and with an underlying hope that something horrible will befall her one day...

Oh ya Lash is a dickhole.. though I think since he was written that way it never really bothered me.

I think the characters that are not written to be annoying but end up that way really get to me the worst lol.

Oh and Darkheart, yeah that would annoy me too.. definately a series I want to avoid reading. lol

message 14: by Book Huntress (new)

Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 84 comments I am having trouble with this as I keep coming up with names and then I'm like, but wait I supposed to hate them, such as Lash from BDB (and he only gets worse)...

So funny because Richard's name is just in neon lights when you ask this question and honestly I can't think of another character that we are supposed to kind of like (I think) but truly cannot stand at all... I mean normally the characters you love to hate are the "bad" guys but Richard... well he's kind of in a class by himself - and this isn't the only Group that has Topics about him which I think is hilarious!!!!

message 15: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Piscary the vampire kingpin from Kim Harrison's Hallow series. I guess I'm repulsed by him more than hate him. Though, there is a fine line between the two emotions.

message 16: by AmandaG (new)

AmandaG (amandag3) | 73 comments Completely agree with everything DarkHeart said about Zoey from House of Night. I can't stand her sh*t and it's kept me from finishing the series (I think I stopped at #3).

There's also something about Sookie that I am not crazy about. I think I also only got through half of #3 in that series. Don't HATE her though. Kinda dislike her.

Oh and I also hated (this time it was HATE) Phury's Wizard. Maybe that was a part of the book and not necessarily the character though. I really didn't like Phury in his book (think it was LEn).

message 17: by new_user (new)

new_user Me too, Amanda. Didn't like Phury or his Wizard, especially his Wizard.

Ugh I HATED Phury!!!

The only reason that book was good was because of JM and the gang.

message 19: by new_user (new)

new_user Yup.

message 20: by Lu (new)

Lu I Absolutely hated William Hamleigh from Pillars of the earth! The book is one of my favorites tho!

message 21: by Cindi (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) I guess I'm just a doormat myself, because I STILL keep wanting Anita to end up with Richard - he is annoying but she loved him SO much in the beginning and he was honest about not really wanting his lifestyle . . . I know, I know. Plus he was REALLY cute back then; I think of those pics of Marcus Schenkenberger as Richard and I can't hate him! And I admit I'm one of the believers that LKH's divorce changed Richard's life as well as hers, well she even admits that's why she made him the way he is now.

message 22: by Ann (new)

Ann | 25 comments You can all hate me on this one....but I HATE Jean-Claude. With all his friken "ma petite" bullshit. I think that LKH loves Jean-Claude so much ( Because she's always commenting about how much she does and the pictures she has of him) and Richard was such a great guy in the beginning of the series that she had to turn Richard into such an asshole just to distract us from the fact that Jean-Claude has been a manipulative bastard the entire series. Seriously! He has been using her from the very beginning. Richards character changed so much and it's crazy to me that he's soooo hateful to her now when he loved her so much. That was not Richard, I think she had to make him so evil just so the Richard fans would turn on him and see Jean-Claude as the lesser evil. Because JC's such a power hungry selfish bastard that LKH had to turn Richard into what he is today so her favorite could be the main story.
I hope they can break their little power three-some and Jean-Claude dies. Sorry!

OMGAW!!!

Really?! Wow, I dont hate you (of course!) but that IS surprising!

message 24: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Spoiler Alert!!!

Sookies brother Jason really gets on my tits, especially when he planned for her to find his wife and his coworker in bed together after she'd done that ceremony for him. Argh! Bills pretty high up on that list as well although he redeemed himself in the last book. A bit.

message 25: by Lu (new)

Lu Lol yea i must say i also don't like Bill. Eric ftw!

message 26: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments I despised Pritkin in book one and still didn't like him for book two, but understood him a bit better. I think he's like fungus with the growing on me.

For all his incredible long list of faults though, the series wouldn't be as enjoyable without him, the rude bastard.
