Irene | 4579 comments Hi Ladies, Would anyone be interested in sharing a group read for August? We have had a couple small but really great group reads this year. COVID has made it harder for some to get books or to conscentrate, so I am open to an older book if it is easier to access or a lighter book if it is easier to focus on, or just about anything. Let me know if anyone wants to share a book discussion. Then suggest a book.

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments Irene I enjoyed the last discussion I will join again. I hope we get more people. But i am in either way.

Irene | 4579 comments Any nomination for a book?

message 4: by Melody (new)

Melody Bush (mab4ksu) I would be interested. I enjoyed the June discussion and sorry to miss July.
Maybe something by Maggie O'Farrell, Iris Murdoch or Andrea Levy. I have only read 2 Murdoch novels and nothing by the other two authors. I really don't care as I enjoy everything.

Ooops, wasn't a June read I participated in, it was whenever we discussed Miracle Creek. Time flies.

Irene | 4579 comments That was all the way back in February, before COVID dominated our lives.

message 7: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I may go back and read m Miracle Creek. It sounds good. I Wouldn't mind any of he authors you suggested. I would also like to suggest tThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

message 8: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Let's get a list of a couple of titles. Then we can open it to a group vote. If we each nominate one title, we may have to do a rank voting since each of us will vote for our nomination.

message 9: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments You never know, If you nominate a book I like better than mine i may vote for it.

message 10: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments I will nominate a classic
"Lamb In His Bosom" by Caroline Miller

message 11: by Melody (new)

Melody Bush (mab4ksu) Irene, that’s perfect. I would love to read that book. Just to add to the fun, I will nominate a book of short stories “A Manual for Cleaning Women” by Lucia Berlin.

message 12: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Well, we have 3 nominations. If there is anyone else out there that would like to add a nomination, we can take it. Otherwise, let's name our 1st and 2nd choice. I will give 2 points for the first place choice and 1 point for the second place choice. Hopefully, that will surface a winner even if we vote for our own nomination.

“A Manual for Cleaning Women” by
Lucia Berlin
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo"
"Lamb In His Bosom" by Caroline Miller

message 13: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Renee, I already read Evelyn Hugo, but I would be glad to join in a discussion if it wins the nomination.
Melody, I have heard great things about that short story collection.

message 14: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments My vote:
1st Place - Lamb In His Bosom
2nd Place - A Manual For Cleaning Ladies

message 15: by Renee (new)

message 16: by Melody (new)

Melody Bush (mab4ksu) I would vote 1) Manual for Cleaning Women and 2) Lamb in His Bosom. They all look good.

message 17: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Let's give another 24 hours to see if anyone else in this group wants to chime in and join us. Right now, "A Manual for Cleaning Women is in the lead.

message 18: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I am going to put a hold on it. My library has been taking lots of tie with books.

message 19: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Sounds like a good idea, Renee. No one else from the group has joined this thread, so I think we can go ahead with " A Manual for Cleaning Women" for our August read. Looking forward to it.

message 20: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments Looking forward to the discussion.

message 21: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I was just checking my library. It does not have Manuel for cleaning women or Lamb in his Bosom. The covid rules does not allow them to get books from other libraries. Could we all nominate again. I think keeping to newer books and more popular titles would make it easier untille libraries are back at full service.

I am making a secons nomination ofThe Dutch House

message 22: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments I would be good with The Dutch House. I have two other GR groups reading it this month, but neither of them discuss as they go along. So, it would allow me to double dip and to read it more closely with a group.

message 23: by Melody (new)

Melody Bush (mab4ksu) The Dutch House is fine with me too. I look forward to it.

message 24: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments Great, we have an August book. Can we set our start date for next weekend?

message 25: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I have requested it from the library I hope to have it soon

message 26: by Vivienne (new)

Vivienne Seatter | 76 comments I have never participated in a reading group before but would love to join if that’s ok. I will get the book.

message 27: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments We would love to have you join us, Vivienne.

Today or tomorrow, I hope to start a thread for the discussion of this book so that the discussion is out of the nomination folder.

message 28: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I do hope you join us. It is fun to discuss with people

message 29: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Hi ladies, I wasn't paying attention earlier, but I just saw you want to read The Dutch House. It's one I've wanted to read. I put a hold on it at my library, but I probably won't get it in August, there's 17 holds ahead of me. But there are 7 copies, so maybe I'll luck out. If I get it, I'll join in, if not, I'll comment later! Enjoy!

message 30: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4579 comments I hope you can get the book quickly, Jennifer.
I started a new thread in the discussion folder for our discussion of this book. See you there. I hope to start reading it tonight.
