Sounds a little bit like Hopsctoch by Kevin Anderson: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24... I also have this vague recollection that John Brunner wrote a novel with a similar theme, but I can't recall the name of it.
Sounds like one of Peter Hamilton's books, from the Void Trilogy. One of the women, Araminta, gets involved with Mr. Bovey, a shop owner who has multiple bodies. There's at least one sex scene (Spoiler alert! It is Peter Hamilton). The mind-synchronized communes might be members of the dream religion tuning into the Dreams via the gaia fields.

Children of the Thunder by John Brunner?

- people with multiple bodies
- people who lived in a mind-synchronized communes
There is certainly a scene in which a man with many bodies has sex with a woman who has one.
I remember that the book had many interesting ideas about body-alternatives. I would very much appreciate your help in finding it back :) Thank you.
