Gary Rae | 1 comments I read this book in the late 1970's. The goblins set off a magical bomb so nobody could remember a large canyon in the middle of the land. One of the main girls was cursed so over the course of the moon cycle she would go from pretty to ugly and when she was pretty she was dumb and when she was ugly she was extremely intelligent. There was also dragons.

Gary, that's a good start. You must add genre (e.g., children or teen fantasy adventure) and plot details (from your comments) to the topic header (title), so someone can recognize your book from that description alone. Many members only read the headers.

We have thousands of book requests. We close threads with vague headers.

Click the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, there's a "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 542 comments Sounds like Piers Anthony's Xanth series starting with A Spell for Chameleon.

"Bink is exiled to Mundania because he has (inadvertently) broken Xanth law by not having a magical talent. He returns to Xanth with Chameleon, a woman whose intelligence and beauty vary inversely depending on the time of the month, and the evil magician Trent who was exiled 20 years earlier for attempting to usurp the throne of Xanth."

Definitely A Spell for Chameleon, which has a large canyon with a forgetting spell around it https://xanth.fandom.com/wiki/Gap_Chasm

STU | 63 comments Definitely one of Piers Anthony's Xanth books.
A Spell for Chameleon is the first book with its story centred around the cursed girl but she also appears in more of the early books I believe.

Mighty_felix | 40 comments It's from the same series and involves some of the same characters and the same canyon. Definitely one of the Xanth books.

Bombing of the Gap chasm happened during the events depicted in _Castle Roogna_ (a prequel book set (mostly) in an earlier time-period of Xanth). The forget spell effects were permanent, and were still around hundreds of years later when the events in _Spell for Chameleon_ happen.

_Spell for Chameleon_ introduces the girl; who takes different names: Fanchon, Wynne, and Dee - depending on her varying aspects over her monthly cycle; pretty/ugly & dumb/smart; and also features both the aforementioned Castle Roogna (an inanimate character/force that is attracting magician-level talents) and the Gap, during the course of Bink's adventures.

Stanley Steamer is the Gap dragon, who inhabits the canyon dividing the land; who takes advantage of the forget spell to more easily capture prey.
