Nicole | 101 comments Just FYI the survey says
"Pick the topics that you would like included in the 2020 RC".

I personally really, really want to move on to 2021 :)

We are stuck in the twilight zone forever...... :(

Jill | 725 comments I upvoted 6: coming of age, BIPOC author, includes a recipe, women overcoming systemic obstacles, biography or biographical fiction and multimedia element.
Downvoted 2: invention or discovery and related to gambling.
But I would be happy with pretty much any out of this group.

HA! Copy and paste error.

Y'all. IT'S BEEN A DAY. I'm so ready for tax season to be over so I can have my husband and routine back in my life.

Kendra | 2118 comments I only upvoted this time around because I don't hate any of the suggestions this time around and would be fine with any of them making it through.

I liked a lot of them too. I hoped we don't have the same problem as last week with splitting the vote too many ways.

Conny | 648 comments Very curious to see how this turns out.
I surprised myself by upvoting, among others, the biography prompt (it feels very run-of-the-mill to me; alsmost every year there is a similar prompt either here or at PopSugar), but I do have Unmasked: A Memoir lying around unread and it would be the perfect opportunity to finally read it :D

Very excited for the multimedia prompt, I hope it gets in! I love it when a book goes a little meta. For all you thriller readers out there, I recommend Jeffery Deaver's XO – the author wrote an entire album of country songs to accompany the book, which is about a (waitforit) country singer, with the lyrics in one of her songs playing a pivotal role in the plot.

The house on the cover and the first-person narrator are both very easy to fill, I think. I feel that most YA is told in first person these days, and I still enjoy reading YA. I also have The Great Big Agatha Christie Re-Read planned for some time soon, so if I allow re-reads in the challenge (and after five years of taking reading challenges with the first three very strictly only allowing never-read, never-owned books, I feel I've sufficiently proven my point), I'll be able to fill a bunch of prompts from those, as she has frequently used first-person narrators and more than one book with a house not only on the cover but even in the title (Crooked House, Peril at End House). May even be a BIO option, I've never tried that before. Hmmmm ....^^

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Could someone help me out with understanding the multimedia prompt? I understand how a book with a playlist is multimedia, but I don't understand how a book that is just texts, or letters, or interviews is multimedia -- unless there is a combination of those with something else in the book. Would any book with an illustration be multimedia because it has words and drawings? Sorry, I feel like I'm missing something on this one. Thanks for any help!

Serendipity | 441 comments I must be feeling in a positive mood this week. I used four up votes (Coming of Age, BIPOC, women overcoming and lesser known lit prize). Most of the others I'd be perfectly happy with but don't want them as much as my top 4. I nearly downvoted blackjack or gambling since the prompt doesn't appeal (no real reason - it just doesn't grab me) but I'm sure I can find somethign to work for it. And I felt bad using just one downvote - especially since i don't hate the prompt.!

Cheri, if it's my understanding, multimedia would be something included in the book that is not just normal writing. Music, letters, emails, PowerPoints, illustrations, recipes, maps, etc. would all count.

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Thanks, Emily. What had me confused is that the explanation of this in the second post gives an example of something told completely in texts.

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments I mean, technically, in order for something to be multimedia, it needs to use more than one means of expression. So to be literalist, I would say that an epistolary novel made up of only letters, or a whole novel told in IMs like that book ttyl by Lauren Myracle that I read once when I was ten and for some reason is still burned into my brain, wouldn't count. But a book like Where'd You Go, Bernadette, which has emails and narrative, or To The Bright Edge of the World, which has letters and journal entries, would. Or, my fave, Dracula, which has letters, diary entries, newspaper articles, ships' log entries, etc.

But I think that the term is used less literally to mean "out of the ordinary means of expressions" too, and I'm sure people will interpret it that way as well. Call it BIO and KIS.

Bec | 1340 comments I changed recipie from bottom to top based on the recommendations of the books that recipies in them. I own one on my kindle. Initially it just seemed too hard to research. I'm one who likes the challenge to help me decide what to read from my long TBR list, not find new books to read - so I don't want to have to do too much research and find a new book.
That said I did vote for new to you BIPCO author where I will need ot stray from my current TBR.
I feel like a book originally written in a language you don't speak has been done so many times - but wouldn't have an issue if it got in.

I almost downvoted the translation prompt for exactly that reason. I've done it so many times in the past few years in many of my reading challenges (I do more than one per year), so I'm just tired of seeing it. I ended up leaving it as a non-vote instead since I have several books that could be good options if needed.

The other one that I'd strongly considered downvoting was the biography/biographical fiction. I ended up leaving it alone because again, there were books I *could* pick if I had to, but the more I think about it, the more I really don't want it. I would go for the fiction half of the prompt for sure, if it gets in.

I'd definitely use the bio/bio fiction prompt as an excuse to read Rodham if it got in.

message 66: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments 6 up and 2 down for me which is rare for me. Usually I spend my votes more on downvotes! So there's a bunch of prompts I really like (my upvotes), some I like or can live with, and a couple I just can't see myself finding something I'd enjoy with.

I also missed the last week or so of discussion so I feel "blind" going into the vote this week since I'm not swayed by any discussion that occurred. Different feeling!

Yes, please let us leave 2020 behind and enter 2021 with a vaccine
for Covid19

Khara Baughan | 48 comments Thanks so much for the suggestions on the books with recipes everyone! Some interesting options there. I have at least one of those on my TBR list and been lowkey meaning to get into micro histories so that is an option too.
