9. Harry's relationship with Sylvia...what do you make of it? Do you think they'll make it?

message 2: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (trakka) | 407 comments I think they suit each other and so long as they both starting being honest with each other then I think they will make it. I hope so anyway!

I don't see this one lasting. Nothing I can put my finger on but neither seems to trust the other with their feelings.

message 4: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne | 607 comments It can't last. Something dramatic will eventually happen to her. Probably something to do with Harry's job......

Tracey (trakka) | 407 comments Oh.... I like Sylvia. Am I just a hopeless romantic:-)

I like her, too...a lot! There's just something missing from their relationship.

Tracey (trakka) | 407 comments I just thought that Harry would have to work at whatever relationship he's in as he's a complicated person.

I will look at your answers to the other questions properly tomorrow. Just got back from a family gathering so am rather tired!

Phrynne | 607 comments I like her too and I can see she is good for Harry. It's just that having a steady relationship doesn't usually happen in books like this.

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) I don't see them making it long-term. She's likeable enough, but I just don't see it.

Was there something missing for you, Crystal?

Yes, but I can't really put my finger on it. I'd like to see Harry with someone else.

I couldn't define it either and I felt Connelly intentionally wrote the character this way.

we're thinking the same thing. There's just a "spark" missing.

That's it! It's just too comfortable.

Yes, like they've already been married for 15 years.... (not to sound weird).

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Although I liked Sylvia (until her actions at the end), I never thought she was the right person for Harry. Both of them are too caught up in their loneliness to make a successful go of it.

Sylvia's claim that she wanted time away from Harry because of his job annoyed me. She knew all along what he did for a living and she didn't seem to have a problem with it, so why the attitude at the end? To me it reeks of an excuse to break it off with him, which is even more irritating given that she wanted him to open up with her and then she shut him out.

Even more perplexing, Lauren, given that she was married to a vice cop.

Exactly!

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I know I commented about the previous book that I didn't trust Sylvia very much, but my opinion of her changed in this story. The fact that Harry confessed that he loved her and wanted to tell her his private story had me really worried that she was the blonde next in line.

I have no idea whether they'll make it long term. This is mainly because I know this series is quite long, but I've not read past this book.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments There is definitely something missing from this relationship. I just can't my finger on it. (I was wondering if it is because Connelly is not a romance writer.) I agree with Crystal. It feels like they're a couple who have been together for 15 years and are used to each other. Anyway, I don't see them continuing for long.

This is a difficulty that many male thriller writers encounter. They know how to write the suspense and the action, but struggle with the romantic emotions.
