I'm looking for a series I used to read but can't remember the name of the series or the author...

It's about a group of humans who were part of an 'earth empire' and one day the empire just 'stops'. no trasmission, no nothing. darkness follows for many 100's of years. So this colony decides to build a spaceship and go looking for 'Lost Earth'. The spaceship captain is chosen by lottery and is a easy/happy go lucky professor. The XO is a hard nose bitch (hilarity ensuse....). The main pilot is a person who hates being on planets. (a quote I remember 'bathing in that giant bathtub, what do you call it 'an ocean' wasn't as bad as I thought')

The first world the discover is populated by werewolves/vampires/etc. that this group doesn't even have words for.

(then I get fuzzy which comes in which order).

One of the worlds has a female/male population ratio of 20:1 The women are in charge, and the men get the short end of the stick.

Eventually the main antagonists show up and its these 7 feet tall people who revel in sexual energy. and bascially kill whole worlds after they've taken all natural resources/stolen a few a people etc. They go around in generation ships.

Anyone remember the name of this series or the author?
