Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie was starving.
She had survived the looting. The gangs. The chaos. But she was going to die because their was nothing left in her stomach to digest. There was nothing worse than the sharp, gnawing pain. It was starvation. It was desperation. It was death.
She walked through the beach on dark wobbling legs towards an empty restaurant that used to be a Crab Shack. As she stepped inside, her boots crunched over broken glass. God she hoped there was canned food left. It was her only option.

Rachel After his sister Diana had gotten home from her walk, Ryan left their house to go out and see what he could do around the town. He couldn't stand being in that house for too long, the memories of his childhood still haunting him. He somehow found himself walking along the beach, kicking at the sand out of boredom. As he walked he looked around himself, it was then that he noticed what seemed to be a girl staggering over the sand towards the remains of the empty restaurant.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments ((Sorry, I'm always ghosting.))

The sound of footsteps sent Jackie running full force into the Crab Shack. She turned into what she thought was the back, where the food she was scrounging for was supposed to be. It was darker inside; there were no broken windows to let in jagged streams of sunlight. She squinted, looking for the fridge/pantry door. It was so quiet she could hear her own racing heartbeat.

message 5: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan frowned in confusion when the girl bolted inside but then he realised why. The sound of him approaching had probably terrified her. He mentally kicked himself but continued to go to her. "Hello, is there anyone in here?" He called as he walked through the front door.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie whimpered. The rational side of her told her to calm down, the voice calling to her was a friendly one. But her irrational side screamed and shouted to run run run away from him. It was a him, which made things worse. Finally she spotted the door, heaving it open to reveal...
The mother load.
She almost cried it was so beautiful. How it wasn't ransacked yet, she didn't know, but it was packed and brimming with canned foods.

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan took another couple of steps inside. "I'm sorry if I scared you." He called to her softly, trying to sound as friendly as possible. "I didn't mean to. I didn't notice you until I heard you run in here. I was daydreaming too much..." He trailed off realising he sounded stupid and that there was no point to this if she was just going to ignore him.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Her heart raced. There were some nice people out there. But at the sight of resources they'd turn into savages. Jackie turned around, he eyes glazing the abandoned kitchen for a weapon. She slammed the door shut and raced towards a rusted steak knife.
"Back off." She growled at the boy, the knife shaking in her grip.

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan jumped back and held his hands up. "Okay. I'm sorry." He said quickly, taking another couple of steps back. "I didn't mean any harm. I just wanted to check you were okay." He said honestly and gave her a sheepish smile.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments "Who are you?" She asked, her voice shaking, and not as loud as she would have liked to sound. She was never the 'tough' girl. Other people always played that role for her. She was just a minion. A background character.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel "Oh sorry. I'm Ryan." He introduced himself and gave her smile. He dropped his hands to his sides again but didn't try move any closer. He didn't want to end up being stabbed with that knife she was holding.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments "Ryan." She nodded, her knuckles aching from the tight hold on the knife. "Ok, Ryan. W-what are you doing here? A-and don't say to check up on me because boys don't just 'check up' on a girl." She said, staring at him with terrified eyes.

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan's eyes widened slightly. "You don't think I'm here to..." He left the sentence hanging. "God no. Never." He said quickly and pushed his hair out of his face. "I was just walking, getting some fresh air, and I saw something move, you. I got curious so I followed for a bit then I realised you were a person and well apart from my little brother and sister I don't get to talk to many people." He admitted and bit his lip.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie didn't answer for a long time. He would've done something by now. He doesn't mean any harm. The rational side of her was now bolstered, and slowly, she put the knife on the counter top. "Ok. Ok." She said to herself, not making eye contact with the boy. "Where do you live?" She asked, her brown eyes flicking back to the pantry.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan sighed with relief when she put the knife down. That was one less thing he had to worry about. "I live not far from here. About a ten to fifteen minute walk I think." He gestured roughly in the direction of his house. "It's a quiet street. The one with the posh houses." He wasn't sure why he was telling this girl all these details but the words just kept on pouring out of his mouth.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments "Ok. Take me there." Jackie said, unable to stop the words from coming out of her mouth. "If you let me live there, you can have half of the supplies in the pantry." She motioned to the open door. "And I'll protect you."

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan's eyes wandered to the pantry. There was quite a lot in there and it made her offer so tempting. "How do I know I can trust you? I mean I have my little sister and my little brother at home. I can't just have anyone living there with them." He wasn't against the idea of taking her back, they had the space after all, he just had to think of his family first.

Cait Sith Fairy (willowkeeper) | 11 comments Jamie walked onto the beach, in her fur form, and started to look around the rubble.

"What would I gain from hurting your family?" She asked, genuinely confused. She was too...simple to realize how desperate she sounded. And desperate people did desperate things to survive; the boy was right to question her motives. "The more people you have in your home, the more likely you are to survive the looters. Trust me."

message 20: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan nodded slowly. She did have a point. "Alright then. We'll need to find something to carry this stuff with. It'll be easier to split when we get there." He started looking around, wondering if there was a bag or anything lying around that they could use. "Does that sound okay?" He asked, glancing back to her.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie nodded, and began to rummage through the lower cabinets for garbage bags. Instead, she found tangled nets in a dusty white cabin below a sink. "Will these work?" She shook them out, coughing as she was clouded in dust.

message 22: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan looked up from where he was looking and nodded. "They'll do perfectly." He told her and smiled. "Oh I never got your name." He suddenly realised. He wasn't interested in prying into her life but he did think he should get to know her name. He looked at her waiting patiently for her reply before starting to sort out the food.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments "Jackie." She said, not making eye contact while walking into the pantry as the nets dragged behind her. She gently laid the canned goods into the net.

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan smiled at her. "Nice to meet you Jackie." He said and walked over to help her with the items in the pantry. "Wow... There's a lot more than I thought originally. This is great." He whispered under his breath, more talking to himself than to her. "They'll eat for weeks." He felt like a huge bundle of stress that had been knotting in his stomach had just been released.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments "Yes..." Jackie too, felt stress roll off her shoulders. She pulled back her matted hair to wipe at the sweat dripping down her neck from the summer sun. She looked out the small window at the sunlight streaming through and listened to the waves crash on the littered shore of the beach. What a great time it would have been to care less. She sighed and shoved the rest of food in the net. "Do you have running water?" She asked, the whimsy in her voice evident. She had been waiting ages to bath again.

message 26: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan nodded as he finished putting the food in the nets. "Yeah we do." It was one of the few reasons he had decided to keep living in their house. The water still worked and while going without food might be hard going without water would be near impossible. "Ready to go?" He asked standing up and lifting the net. "The walk isn't long but we'll have to be quick. We don't want to wave this food around too long." He wiped his arm across his forehead and waited for her reply.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie nodded. That was a good idea. It was not uncommon to be jumped in broad daylight. It wasn't like there were police to stop them. "Lead the way." She said quietly while heaving the net over her shoulders.

message 28: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Ryan nodded and started walking. "It's this way." He told her. They left the beach and walked through the streets with mostly abandoned houses. After about ten minutes of walking Ryan pointed out his house. "That's us there." He told her with a smile.

Puddingtalk (Marie) (puddingtalk) | 29 comments Jackie almost melted with relief. "Wow." She breathed. An actual home. With running water. "It's beautiful." She headed towards it, mesmerized like a baby who saw the sunset for the first time.
