Modesitt has long been one of my favorite fantasy authors (I'm less familiar with his science fiction). There's such a feeling of comfort in how he gradually tells his story, letting tension build through the mundanity (but somehow interesting) details of every day life and just trying to get by before some big obstacle is put in place.
Before the announcement of the interview, I'd never heard of him. But I enjoyed the interview and am interested in what might be a good 'starting point' book of his. The new book doesn't seem like it would be a great place to start...

I was hooked reading The Towers of the Sunset, which is a semi stand alone Recluse novel. I don't know if it's the perfect entry point, but it sold me back in the 90's when I first read it.
I also entered his Imager series a few years ago with Madness in Solidar (book 9, but the start of a particular era in the series)
That was quite a unique tone compared to other interviews. Very scholarly!

Fantasy preferred. I'll look into Towers of the Sunset.
Oh - one thing to note about his fantasy is that even though these are 10+ and 20+ novel series, he generally only spends a couple of books in a particular setting / character / point in the timeline. So - with Recluce - I think there are only 3 books at most with the same character. Same with Imager. Can't speak to Spellsong. I think Corean Chronicles works the same, but I've only read the first three of those.
