read this book 15+ years ago and seemed quite old then
???Spoilers perhaps???

Fantasy set in classical fantasy age with magic prophecy and warring factions

The plot had three central characters two men and a woman

one man was chosen by a group that worshipped the volcano god. they have a prophecy that if he is thrown in the volcano he will be reincarnated as the god and is thrown in about 2/3 of the way through to be reborn in a pillar of flame

the girl you follow from about 15 when she is living with her father when one of his associates visits them and she falls in love they bang but he leaves and doesn't speak to her again apart from a mention in a letter to her father. she vowes never to fall in love again and uses her body as a tool for power ends up travelling with the third character and exploring the world

third character is travelling around learning magic trying to piece everything together. he talks of the gem mines where men used to earn a dowry are now full of slaves for the empire
