message 151: by Savvy (new)

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments As this has drifted toward a "squawk-out"...I had an interesting experience last night.
I'd gone down to the end of the dock to better view the firework display and within a few minutes, I was 'swooped' by at least five bats and a large owl!
I decided to seek the sanctuary of the house, as I felt these feathered brethren were terrified at the loud bangs and fire in their sky...and maybe thought I'd called it all up?
Reminded me of some of the post-apocalyptic scenes I've seen in movie trailers of late!...eeeeerireeeee....
so I hied myself outta there....I ABSQUATULATED!

The ducks were not quacked up by fireworks on our lake. They were deeply chagrined (and no grinning).

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Also chagrined were the cats around here (Cheshires, maybe?)

My dog was unfazed. Humans are a noisy lot.

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) but Skeet my Parakeet was thoroughly disconbobulated:)

I'll have to absquatulate round five to avoid the 5.30 road madness!

message 157: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) skied and skiing ????

message 158: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I suppose you can sky something so Skied could be both the alpine activity or the missed penalty over the crossbar kind. Was that what what you were aiming at:)

message 159: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I just pause every time I see these words. Skied should not, by any rule I know, be pronounced "skeed." And skiing, well, just looks weird, doesn't it?

message 160: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I always iked the word skullduggery:p
oddly humourous and slightly sinister. First encountered it when I was reading Shrubbery Skulduggery

message 161: by Drora (new)

Drora Kemp | 11 comments Newengland, thank you. I was all set to protest and point out that the word's spelling is unphased. And then I looked at my word and realized it must have something to do with phase. Checked it, and even my Mac dictionary told me you were right.

I love the word bemused.

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments NIDIFICE...I found this and think it will be a fun one to use...bring back into usage! I mean aren't all those little cubicles in offices like nidifices?

nidifice n 1656 -1656
a nest
The lizard climbed into the nidifice, only to be eaten by the mother eagle.

message 163: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments The rat tried to make a nidifice in the BBQ charcoal. Guess what he was nullified.

message 164: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) is a lexiophobe someone who doesn't like words, then?

Two words I came across in two different P.D.James books which intrigued me,still does-onomatopoeic words-"sussuration"and"ululation".
