This empowering book blew me away with the dynamic of rebel pirate girls taking on the corrupted rule of Aric Athair. Caledonia Styx is the captain of the all-girl pirate crew of the Mors Navis, her revolutionized ship. After an encounter with a soldier from Aric's fleet which left her and her best friend, Pisces, homeless, Cala decided it was time to fight back. At only age 16 they slowly built up their crew from just the two of them until present-day at 18 they now are ready to take on the fleet in a quest to find Cala and Pisces brothers who they thought were dead. Having to relay her trust in one of Aric's soldiers who saved Pisces' life, she is betting on the impossible to find the remains of her family.
The world-building in this book is phenomenal, it has the feel of Mediterranean mythology and steampunk energy entertained together that I didn't know I needed. This book has all the feminism and unwavering determination I need to last a lifetime. The way Caledonia is so certain of herself and her crew despite being hunted throughout all the seas is so endearing. The friendships and relationships between the crew are so heartwarming, although it makes the losses even harder.
This book is so action-packed and thrilling as it takes you around on a journey throughout the world Natalie C. Parker has created. Always on the brink of survival or death aboard the Mors Navis, this book will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout all the twists and turns it takes to keep Cala and her crew alive.
I'm going to give a fair warning though, this book is really amazing and the ending will leave your heart shattered, there's a big plot twist coming...
