To e-read or not to e-read...

Welcome to TC Amanda - Hope you enjoy our little gathering.
I will probably get one eventually because of the compactness, but I still like the feel and smell of books.

It's cheaper than Kindle, not tied to Amazon, and serves multiple purposes. That said, it will never replace actual books. Like Jim said, it has the wrong feel.

I'll use this horrifying method to describe my reluctance towards going completely e-book: when I go do "number 2" in the bathroom, I like to take something with me to read. A book, a newspaper, etc. Something I can hold with two hands. I don't like the feeling of holding a small device in my hands and having to squint while nature calls. So, no Kindle for me, especially when I have to poo.

(Poor Amanda...heh...her first thread, and seven posts until poop...)

RA, surely that must be a record for the TC, but I recall one thread where it took about 3 posts before someone was talking about dropping a deuce. Or pinching a loaf. Or leaving some friends at the pool, etc.

ha! Well at least it's comical...

Since when did you let me stop you from doing what you want to do? Have at it, Gus, if it makes you happy...

There are pros and cons. Like Sarah Pi mentioned (I'm jealous, by the way), they can be great for people who travel a lot. My big con with them would be the price; if it's stolen, it's not easily replaceable. (And would amazon replace the stolen "information" on a new Kindle, so to speak?)
I'm interested in their function on a college level, having downloadable text books for (hopefully) cheaper that can be marked up and kept or deleted, rather than students getting screwed by book stores. Sadly, I think money is so important in the equation that an e-textbook might cost the same or only slightly less than a paper version.
There's one college library that is doing away with all their books... which I think is the stupidest idea ever. Embrace technology; don't let it replace humanity.

I like that!
I like that!

We should keep track.

What are your views on e-readers/e-books? Yesterday, I saw someone using an e-reader for the first time, and I have have to say, with my 20-pound purse filled with the four books I'm currently reading, I was a little jealous.
I'm seriously considering one...
