The Great Gatsby is an astonishingly unique critique of the American people in the roaring '20s. All of the novel's cast are rampant with character flaws; not as in they're poorly written, but they stray far from most people's moral compasses. It seems as though every character is motivated by selfishness, pride, or greed. Meanwhile, the main character Nick is simply a spectator, he is so intertwined with everything that is happening but yet he has no bearing on any of the events in the novel, he simply serves as our eye into this story. The realistically sour take this book has on lavish American life is so interesting and unique from any other form of media. We as the reader can only watch as immoral acts are committed and the consequences of those acts follow. I have never left a book feeling so reflective as I have with The Great Gatsby and there will probably never be a book that will make me feel such a way again.
