Because I was a goody two shoes, I read everything I was supposed to, so I replaced this with a book my dad loves - Perfect Victim by Christine McGuire and Carla Norton
I read all that we were supposed to, so I'll chose a book that one of the other classes read (we had different books chosen for us depending on our level in English)
Frankenstein is so great. Oh man. Love that book. That's what I recommended for my friend doing this challenge.
I'm thinking I will read Of Mice and Men for this one. I somehow kept skipping the English classes that were reading it in High School and missed it completely.
If memory serves, I managed to get through the section on W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind without actually reading it. Kind of a relevation for me that I could bluff it like that.
So I just finished Lord of the Flies for this one. It got me thinking about how different the book would have been if written today. In 220 pages Golding manages to create a universe and characters we are invested in using scarce prose and dialogue and allusions to events that have taken place when the reader wasn't present. If it was written today it would have been three books and a novella spanning a 1000 pages or so and everything would have been very explicit. Personally I'm a fan of the modern style, I want to know how and when Raloh's mother does, what war is going on, I want a chapter on each character and great chunks of dialogue. I am completely in awe of the of the skull it took to create it in such a sparse way though.
Definitely! It's a great book.I'm trying to think of a book the other English classes read, brain not working though.
Might have to choose Frankstein too, as I've never read that yet.

I do like books with the Tolkien-like explanations though. :)

Frankenstein is also really amazing! Yay Mary Shelley!
Since I also read every book I was meant to at school, I decided to take The Bunker Diary from my daughter's reading list for this year, since I had to buy the book anyway ;-)
I'm currently reading To Kill a Mockingbirdfor this as I never got round to reading this and now that the sequel is coming out I'm glad I started it.
I am going to read The Westing Game next month. Right now I am slogging through reading for my master's thesis :/
I ended up rereading To Kill A Mockingbird for this - I read it at a young age but not for HS, even though it was on a different teacher's freshman reading list. Just as great the second time around.
