Time to nominate some books for our next CLASSIC CLUB read(s) for 2015.

What would you like to read and discuss for our next CLASSIC reads? Please make these older books, no new releases. If you nominate a book, be willing to lead the discussion of the book if your book is selected.

We will be running a poll in a few weeks to select our reads from the books nominated.

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I'm in the mood for adventure!

The Once and Future King by T.H. White

message 3: by Petra (new)

Petra That was a fun book, Jennifer. A bit young but so much fun.

I nominate Little Man, What Now?.

message 4: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Petra, another group I'm in read a book by Fallada last year. I only got a couple of chapters into Every Man Dies Alone, but what I read I liked.

message 5: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments No one else wants to read classics in the new year?? :(

I know, Jennifer. :-(
Well, if we don't get any other noms, I guess we will just have to read the two that you and Petra nominated! :-)

That's good to hear, Jennifer. I haven't read any of his books yet.

Petra I really liked Flowers For Algernon. Beowulf is good, too. There are some good choices here.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I had Flowers For Algernon on my SRC lists for a little while and never got around to reading it.

Okie Dokie! Well we have a 3-way tie for our next Classic Read so I guess these will be our next three reads! :-)

So who would like to go first? Nominators/leaders, please chime in. If you are willing to go first please say so. Or if you have other commitments and would prefer your read to come up a few months from now.

The three books are:

The Once and Future King : leader Jennifer
Little Man, What Now? : leader Petra
Flowers for Algernon : leader Jayme the ghost reader

message 14: by Petra (new)

Petra Wow..a 3-way tie! That's an interesting result.
I can be ready any time. Looking forward to reading with everyone.

message 15: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I would rather not go first, but I could make it happen if needed.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I don't have my book yet so I prefer not to go first.

Okay, then it sounds like Petra will be first, with Little Man, What Now?. :-)

Petra, I will let you decide your own schedule and start date. I would ask for a start date at least a month from now though, to give ladies a chance to try to round up a copy from their library, or to purchase one. It looks like the book is available on kindle, but paperback or hardcover copies for purchase look harder to come by.

Jennifer and Jayme, do either of you have a preference as to going second or third?

message 18: by Petra (last edited Jan 25, 2015 12:55PM) (new)

Petra Okay, I'll go through my copy and come up with a schedule.
How about we start reading on Sunday, March 1st and discussing the book the week after? Does that date work for everyone? I'm flexible, so whatever works for the group is fine with me.

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Start reading March 1st sounds good for now. :-)

message 20: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Sounds good to me. I can get a copy from the library, so I should be ready to go by then!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I don't have a preference of going second or third.

message 22: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Neither do I.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I guess we can flip a coin.

message 24: by Petra (new)

Petra I have a tentative schedule for Little Man, What Now?. The next two evenings are busy with appointments so I may not be able to post it before Wednesday.
Who's going to join me for this read? How is everyone doing in getting a copy of the book?
My copy's pages have wide margins and larger than normal font (not huge font but still noticeably larger by a bit).

message 25: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
I've ordered a copy but it is not here yet. But it has been shipped. :-)

message 26: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I have to ILL a copy, but it'll only take a week or so to get here, so I'll get on that in a couple of weeks.

Does anyone else have any preference for Jayme or I to go next with our books?

message 27: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
It doesn't matter to me. I've ordered all of these books, so I am game for whatever order everyone else wants to do.

message 28: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4584 comments Hope to join the discussion of Little Man

message 29: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Since we're almost done with Little Man, are there any thoughts as to which book should go next? I have The Once and Future King from the library, but haven't started it yet, or I could easily get my hands on Algernon. Anyone else have any preferences?

message 30: by Petra (new)

Petra For Once And Future King, are we reading the first volume only or the entire series?

I just read it a short time ago and don't know if I'm up for a re-read but may thumb through the book for the discussion.

message 31: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments My edition has the whole thing, which is what I'm aiming to read. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with people reading the first book and see if they want to continue with it beyond that.

message 32: by Petra (last edited Mar 17, 2015 04:53PM) (new)

Petra Once you get started, you'll want to read the rest. The first is really entertaining and fun; charming, even.

Just a note: the first book reads a bit like a YA book but the rest don't.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I just finished reading Algernon. I don't mind doing that next. However, if people want to do another book, I do have to return my copy to the library.

message 34: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
I have copies of both. Algernon seems like it will be a quicker read. Do we want to do it first, since the discussion will probably be shorter, so then we can focus more time on reading the whole Once and Future King?

message 35: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Sounds good to me, especially since Jayme is read to go!

message 36: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I read Algernon in high school, but I don't remember much of it, so I'll probably take it out and reread it.

message 37: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4584 comments I read both of these in HS. But, I did not know that Once & Future King had multiple volumes. I suspect I only read the first one.

message 38: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Jayme, are you willing to do Algernon next? I will leave the discussion dates/schedule up to you. :-)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Sure. I thought starting April 1st. If everyone needs more time. That is fine as well.

message 40: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments April 1 is good for me!

message 41: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
April 1st works for me also. :-)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) okay, the book is broken down into 17 reports. Some are shorter than others. My copy has 285 pages. I thought we could read about 70 pages a week and that take a month to read.

message 43: by Petra (new)

Petra Sounds good, Jayme. April 1st works for me, too.

message 44: by Petra (new)

Petra Irene wrote: "I read both of these in HS. But, I did not know that Once & Future King had multiple volumes. I suspect I only read the first one."

The first book is really fun, Irene, with lots of magic and adventures for little Arthur (when he was still called Wart). I think you'll want to continue, though, for what its worth.

message 45: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4584 comments Petra, I am always afraid to re read, as an adult, a book I loved as a youth. Too often, the magic is gon when I do this. But, if this group is going to read the entire series, I may just have to start it at the beginning and finish it with you.

message 46: by Petra (new)

Petra Ah, you've read it before. Sorry, I didn't realize that.
I read the series for the first time a couple of years ago and was charmed by it.

message 47: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4584 comments Only the first volume. I did not know that there was multiple volumes until this thread.
