Pru is pregnant and Carleton, realizing the child is his, steps up and marries her. He also bails her out of jail but isn’t convinced of her innocence. Why was it so hard for him to accept her word?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I'm sure everyone he arrests claims to be innocent. He probably felt like it was just one more murderer, even though he didn't want to believe that Pru would do such a thing.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments He has more than a little cynical view of life. I think he truly wanted to believe she was innocent of the murder, but his life experience was a lot to overcome.

Laura . He is programmed to go with the evidence, so her holding the knife was difficult to overlook. At least right away. Guilty until proven innocent it seemed.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments Again, I agree, but I was disappointed that everyone who looked questionable was assumed to be guilty.

I also think it was Carleton’s cynicism that was the driving force preventing him from considering Pru’s innocence. She had much more to lose with him dead and why kill him on her wedding day? He had tunnel vision here and was protecting his fragile heart.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments The thing that bothered me was that Pru had no motive. If she hadn't married George, her baby would have no father. It didn't make sense that she would have killed him.

Carleton was a cynic due to his profession (mostly) and I think he didn't want to get his heart broken.
