Section 1

Please keep all discussion and speculation to the events of Prologue, Chapter 1-13.

No spoiler tags required. Though it would be highly appreciated if you Uncheck Add to my Update Feed to avoid accidentally spoiling this for your good read friends.

Please do not discuss events from later chapters. Referring back to events from a previous book is fine.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Loving the fast start to this. Ole Mr. Sanderson is not messing about.

Karen | 54 comments Damn - didn't see the new stuff coming. as Scott has said - Mr Sanderson isn't pulling punches with this one!

And yes - this will be giving me some seriously late nights :)

Suzanne | 1582 comments This section has me pretty curious about epic weaknesses. It would indeed be interesting (and make sense) if they were somehow related to past lives.

It seems like Sanderson is foreshadowing this on pages 54-55, so I bet you'll turn out to be right :)

Christina Pilkington | 126 comments Definitely a fast paced book so far. I'm liking the world building the best so far - really digging how people are living on the roofs of skyscrapers, how the city is lit up with the florescent spray paint and the indoor gardens.

And...Megan is back! So awesome to see her at the end of this first section. I want some scenes now with her and David!!!!

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Agreed about the world building; the city stands out so vivid in my mind. Excellent descriptions

Tammy I have to wonder what kind of crazy research went into determining that an epic had a weakness to Koolaid!?

This seemed fairly out there, however now that they are talking about an Epic's past perhaps being related to a weakness, this might make some sense.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Ha I agree....I kept picturing the "Hey Koolaid" guy from the commercial chasing her.

Sky | 1291 comments I am still kind of meh at this point - as with Steelheart, maybe its too YA/happy for me, or maybe i am just not a big super hero buff. It's missing some, i dunno, nuance?

Tammy I believe what is more interesting than the epic's dirty deeds, are some of the concepts being introduced about calamity and the epics.

Why do some people become epics and others not? Why do they become more evil as they use their powers? Why are some Epics able to resist becoming consumed by their power? How does their past play into their current epic abilities and cruelty? Why can't Regalia stop herself from dooming her City?

Lots of teasers in these first chapters but no real answers yet. It will be interesting to learn more.

I completely agree. Actually I think at this point I'm only reading it to find out the answers to these questions. I'm much more interested in the themes and world building aspects to this book. The action scenes and writing style are just meh for me.

terpkristin So yeah, I listened to this today and the KoolAid thing was too much. Every person over the age of 8 or so could be said to be avoiding Kool Aid except maybe high school/college girls who use it as cheap temporary hair dye. I so don't buy into that as a weakness.

It was interesting to see Obliteration, whose powers seem very hard to overcome. It was also nice to see some fallibility in the intel, as sometimes it seems "too easy" to overcome these epics. I mean, the story drags out the fight scenes way too darn long but there isn't a lot of surprise.

I'm getting annoyed with David routinely doing his own thing and not getting punished for it. And he doesn't seem to be learning lessons from it either. In fact, he gets rewarded when Prof takes him to NYC.

Interesting to see Megan/Firefight return but I fear this means yet another book of David mooning over her with bad metaphors/similes.

A solid meh so far.

I finally started this one on the plane ride home yesterday.

This isn't exactly my favorite Sanderson series, but I'm finding it a nice light read after the heaviness of The Sparrow.

I like the change of scenery and the addition of new characters.

And I don't know what you're talking about Kristin. I'm totally having my morning Kool-Aid right now..
