Sam | 5 comments 1) His rhetorical devices seem to lend a down-to-earth, humble quality to all of his characters. The similes that he uses help convey certain characteristics to the reader. His rhetorical devices lend his characters a realistic feeling.
2) The people of the novel seem to be determined, hard-working people, who are dedicated to their community. They work very hard for the people that they love, and themselves.
3) The literary period this book represents is either realism or naturalism, due to its portrayal of the harsh reality of life, and social classes and conditions.
