independant reading assinment 2015

I am reading the book "The adventures of Huckleberry Finn" from the approved AP reading list. this book is very challenging for me to understand. All the improper spelling and old slang is a bit hard to read at some times. I however really enjoy the challenge to try to accomplish reading it.

When you get to the heavy dialogue--try reading it out loud phonetically. It really isn't that far from some of the dialects still found in some areas of our nation. It is difficult for many to get past the 'n' word, but studying the evolution and connotations of the term is very interesting and may give you some insights into Twain's irony. Hope this helps :)

I recommend you read Tom Sawyer before The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, since Huck Finn is a sequel. I found the writing style simpler in Tom Sawyer too, so perhaps you should read that one before Huck Finn, to give you an introduction to Twain's writing style.

My students have the same problem, and have found it helpful to listen to audio while reading along to get used to the dialog. We use this link: http://www.loudlit.org/works/hfinn.htm

After the first few chapters, when you get an ear for the dialect, it is much easier to read.

I totally agree! I have used the audio book as a support to many of my students.

I don't really see Huck as a sequel to Tom, but I do agree that reading Tom first can get you into the Twain mode. Good suggestion!

iv got a little farther in my book. I tried reading it out loud and it helped a lot! I still have trouble figuring out the tone and strategies theyre trying to portray throughout the book but its getting easier.

the book is progressing and actually becoming very interesting and am understanding it a lot better.

Great! I'm just curious, Taylor, do you have other students to talk to about the book? Do you have teacher support? or are you just reading it solo?
