ABANDONED. Fantasy series. Main character had pen knife-like weapon, carved magical symbols into himself & surrounding. Uses a symbol (stay) to freeze adversaries chasing him. Possibly thief or anti-hero(?). Possibly 1995-2005(?).

Please help me find this series! I had one, I think of three, the main character had a pen knife like weapon and he had the ability to carve symbols into himself and surroundings and create and effect or spell, I remember one part of the book where he is chased to his place of living and he uses a symbol (stay) the adversary’s are all frozen as he grabs a few items and flees, maybe he is a thief or anti hero? I think there might be creatures called yami that manifest at times?? Any help would be appreciated been looking for years!!! Thank you!!!
