Murder on the Orient Express
question
June Blog Entry #2

I’m reading Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie and I am 80 % in reading the book. I was hoping on finishing the book before writing this entry but i’ll be done by the end of this week. So far, the book is very scheming because since the book is written in Poirot’s perspective, we don’t know what the other characters are thinking, and they are the suspects. Poirot had slightly overheard a conversation between Mary Debenham and Colonel Arbuthnot on the train to Stamboul which made her his primary suspect for a while she was the most suspicious. Mary Debenham is a cool and collected woman and Poirot questions her motives. She hides her identity as we find out she is in reality Daisy Armstrong’s governess and she is romantically involved with the colonel. Her way of dressing is somber, which also intertwines with how she is rmysterious and hides her identity in the beginning. Poirot pays attention to every detail so he figured out she was lying during the time where they were carrying out a conversation in the dining car. I have realized that Poirot knows how to ask the perfect questions by being blunt and getting the suspects to give him viable information without even noticing. Poirot is the harshest with Mary during interrogations because he is captivated by her defiance and strong-mind. This barrier she upholds with Poirot makes her look like the person capable of such an intricate death.
Ratchett was murdered by being stabbed multiple times. Thus far, Mary Debenham is the one that I suspect the most but I am at point where Poirot is starting to see the different relationships between the 12 suspects because they are very protective of each other and very united. The book is also very deceptive because although Poirot is a very meticulous detective, he focuses more on the main suspects ike Mary when Hector McQueen, who was Ratchett’s secretary, could be as important. I’m so close to finding out and I hope the ending doesn’t disappoint me because I’m really liking how detailed and thrilling the book is.
