Kate (pdxstitch) | 88 comments Not sure if this is really a library manual suggestion, but I noticed today that when I followed the manual's instructions for adding literary awards that it wasn't working out for me. I was trying to update all the books that received nominations for the 2014 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, but typing in "National Book Award Nominee for Young People's Literature (2014)" ended up adding the award "National Book Award for Young People's Literature," instead of adding the "National Book Award" with the category being "Young People's Literature." I'm not sure what the exact issue is (when I went through and did the Poetry nominees there was no problem with the system picking up on the 'for' to make Poetry a category instead of part of the name of the award). I ended up working around it by making two edits to each book, first adding "National Book Award Nominee (2014)" and then going back and adding "Young People's Literature" in the category box.

Could the problem be the apostrophe? Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? If this is an issue that other people have encountered, maybe it warrants a mention in the appropriate section of the manual.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes, I think it is the apostrophe. I have noticed when any non-alpha character follows the "for" a new award is created.

Kate (pdxstitch) | 88 comments I've since worked more with awards and it seems to be any "weird" characters. I've had the issue when apostrophes, hyphens, or any accented letters (é, à, ö, etc) have followed the "for."

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yep - I have had several award recently that had a / in the category - Mystery/Thriller, for instance - as well as the apostrophe. With experience, you finally get to know that some things just have to be edited, rather than trying to get it in the first go at it. I don't know that I'll be doing any foreign awards, but thanks for the heads up on the non-English characters, too.
