Book condition seemed fairly new.
Young adult, fantasy fiction.
Believe author was female, but could be wrong.
An important identifying marker: it had a little poem at the beginning and end of the book. Something about darkness and revenge.
Book 1 in a YA series
Takes place in a world with magic. The father of the protagonist, the teenage girl, is part of a group (of mages?) who fight against the evil bad guys. I think he was relatively high ranking, and his daughter may have been gifted in turn also. There was a war between the two factions. Both suffered heavy losses. I think the leader of the bad guys retreats to recover and tells the group of good guys of a second "coming" to wipe them out for good (?).
At the beginning of the book the protagonist wakes up and sees a similarly teenage boy near her. She's cautious and defensive, but when she realizes he's not a threat, she decides it's best that they work together. A sandstorm comes. After they survive that, she realizes that it's not that bad working with this boy who's around her age, but she's weirded out that he has no memory of who he is. She's on a mission to avenge her father, and find the truth about her mother. Also, preparing for the coming war and filling her father's footsteps in the good guy faction(?).
While she's trying to get out of the desert with this boy, she flashes back to her driving purpose.

She remembers as a child, her father was in a cave to do some kind of mission and took her with him, but the bad guys came. He told her to run while he stalled them for time. He died. She vows to get revenge on them.
The mom went missing a long time ago, but she refuses to believe her mother is dead; she thinks her mom is just undercover.
Or, she was fed a lie of her mom's death to protect her and her dad revealed to her her mom's actual status when he told her to run, but she didn't get the whole truth (because ran out of time?). Something along those lines.
I THINK the father handed her his dagger when he told her to run, and she pulls it out to remember what her mission is and give her strength in the desert.
