This has been an ongoing discussion, lol. Did she mean 'spirit' as an analogy for Ian's DNA, or did she mean that Ian and his son shared the same spirit, literally? I personally think she meant the first, that Emily was pregnant when Ian left. In Native American 'law' the father of the child was the one who is living in the home, regardless of who supplied the fertilizer, lol. I think that she was saying that even though Ian wasn't his father in terms of the tribe, she knew that Ian was the one who helped concieve him.

But for now it's all open to interpretation. DG hasn't said one way or the other. She says she would rather leave us unsure and forming our own opinions.

I don't doubt DG is toying with us a bit! I think I'll just keep in my heart that they belong together and wait to see how it pans out. I can be patient. I can be patient. I can be can patient!.....{she's says to heerself, unconvincingly}

That is so cool! So, answers the question just how angry Jamie will be! Can't wait to see the rest of that scene.

Thanks for posting this. I loved it. I am in awe of this writer! Her characters are just incredible.

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments I agree, I think its the first...thinking back to when I read Clan of the Cave Bear (as an other example) - they believe that two people's battle and if the male's win, then the woman becomes pregnant and that each spirit has the soul of an animal...

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Exactly, which Ian says is what his tribe believed. And that it wasn't happening because Ian's spirit couldn't overcome Emily's.

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) I didn't get that Swiftest of Lizards was Ian's bio child until I started reading reviews. I'm still not sure, I wish I had the book in front of me.

When Ian tells his father about Swiftest is his language still vague?

message 459: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (js33) I checked back this morning - when Ian Jr was with Ian Sr as he was dying, he told him about Emily, etc. Ian Sr told him to tell his mother, she would be happy to know about his son.

message 460: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I firmly believe that Swiftest of Lizards is Ian's son. I think that her tribe made him believe that he would never father a child with her. but that maybe she was pregnant when he was forced to leave and they didn't want to tell him about it.
That's the impression I got.

message 461: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I definitely think that Swiftest of Lizards is Ian's son and that Emily was pregnant with him when Ian left. I'm not sure that the tribe knew that she was pregnant though. I think that only the Grandmother knew that the baby was actually of Ian.

message 462: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (medikatedzombie) | 11 comments Here is how I think Jamie will handle the sex between Clarie and LJG:It will start with an argument of course, then Jamie will have rough sex with Clarie to assert dominance over her in his way of erasing the memories of LJG and her. Kinda like "I'm way better than him" kinda attitude.

I'm not sure it would be in an "I'm better than him" way or making it about dominance, maybe more in a "this is my woman" way. Sort of like the advice Roger gave Jamie about having sex with Claire immediately after her rape. Not only does it help replace the bad memories with loving ones, but if there's a baby, at least in his heart, it will be his. (I know Claire is beyond getting pregnant, but the theory is still the same.)

message 464: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I'd like to see Jamie and Claire have a real knock down, drag out fight (without anyone getting hurt of course). Think of the great makeup sex they'd have then.

That would be the best sex scene ever... lol
The passion of it...
Better than when they scratch, fight and bite in Outlander (I think)?? :)

I completely agree!!! I finished this book in February and I am still going nuts thinking about all the time left to wait for book 8!!

Laura | 47 comments Does anyone else think that there should have been more loss, more despair shown by Claire when they told her Jaime was dead? They have such an epic love, I felt her a bit empty, so out of character for Claire!!

message 469: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments She contemplated suicide for heavens sake! If that isn't despair I don't know what is.

message 470: by Mary G. (new)

Mary G. (nonometoo) | 319 comments I felt that Claire's despair was so deep and far reaching that she found it difficult to function. She was able to muddle through the daytime, to some extent, but the nights were awful. I don't know how her grief could have been written any differently to describe it's depth. I still have a hard time making it through that part without tearing up.

Don't worry I did not get that Jamie and Claire told Michael, Jenny and Ian that she was a time traveler, until I was reading it here. I'm now listening to EITB again(almost done) amazed at the details I missed or just do not remember. I believe these are books that need to read more then once. I have read some of these books several times and still find parts that I don't remember or that I see in a different light now that I know the rest of the story. I'm at the part now where she finds out Jamie is dead and I know he is not but I still want to cry.

I completely agree. The whole last part of the book was way too rushed - things like Jamie's death and the meeting of William and Jamie got a less time and attention than Claire treating the wounded on the battlefields! Seriously, what gives? I hope she reassesses this in the next one.

Thank you!! I totally agree with you!! I don't have an issue with anything that happened in the book, I just think it needed to be fleshed out and described more. I mean, Claire losing Jaime?! In my mind I cannot see her crawling out of that, even half functioning, it would be like her almost dying, she would go right along with him...almost. I just didn't get that feeling. But agree with you, maybe she will get back to it in the next book. So anxious for it!

message 477: by Gwennie, biblioholic (last edited Jul 07, 2011 01:29PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I think that we all tend to project how we think she should have reacted. Claire is a fighter, I've always thought that if Jamie went first Claire would be able to continue on. She'd have only half a soul, and his loss would slowly eat away at her every day, but I thought that she'd be better off then if she went first and left Jamie.

She acted exactly as I thought she would (except for the little thing with Gray). She was empty, but she was still going through the motions and protecting her loved ones. Being pragmatic is part of Claire's chemical make-up.

It did feel rushed, though. The only difference is that I thought that it was supposed to. It was all coming out and at the same time. Like a carbonated beverage that has been shooken up so many times that it just erupts everything out at once. Diana wrote it all like the stars cosmically alligned just so, that everything just burst forth at once. Which means that the next book will be dealing with the fallout. I can't wait to read it.

I loved it.

message 478: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Wendy: I don't think I could have said it any better than you just did. I always thought Claire's reaction to Jamie's "death" was exactly how I thought she would have reacted. Clearly she was devestated and even thought suicide was the answer, but she knew that there were others that were depending on her and she went on with "life", such as it was.

I, too, can't wait for the next book. The suspense is killing me!

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments i guess from where i'm sitting...she has already thought jamie was dead several times and even survived 20+ years without him...so while I think she was completely devestated, she has picked up and moved on before...so maybe that gave her strength to do it again
