Sheila | 2155 comments Thanks for jotting these down

message 54: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments Thanks from me too, Ann. I was able to find the audiobook of Sag Harbor at my e-library and will listen to it on my trip back to IA.

message 55: by Mary (new)

Mary D | 77 comments I thought THE BOSTON GIRL sounded very familiar when we talked about it yesterday. I think I’ve read everything Diamant has written. So today I looked it up. I read it in 2015 and this is what I wrote at the time: “Anita Diamant had me hooked by the end of the second page. Addie Baum's youngest granddaughter asks if she can interview her. She wants to learn how her grandmother became the woman she is today. And so the story unfolds. And what a delightful way to learn about this character and the others in her life. And along the way learn about the lives of women in the first half of the 20th century. Diamant has a talent for depicting the details of time and place and capturing the rhythms of language and conversational speech. Reading this story feels like being a contemporaneous observer.”

Ruth | 11076 comments I’m sorry I missed it. I’m down with one of those awful back spasmy things.

message 57: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments We missed you, Ruth! I hope you feel better soon.

message 58: by Sherry, Doyenne (new)

Sherry | 8261 comments I'm sorry I didn't attend. I completely missed the email about it. I get so many emails that I'm overwhelmed! I'll be there next time.

message 59: by Ann D (new)

Ann D | 3803 comments Ruth I'm so sorry to hear you've been unwell. I hope the back problems clear up soon.

message 60: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments I wondered about your absence, Sherry, and almost texted you. Then I got involved in the discussion and didn't get it done. If it happens next time, I'll definitely send you a text!

Sheila | 2155 comments Managed to get my PC back up and functioning. That was twice in a day that it Blue Screen of Death-ed on me. It is my very old webcam that is causing the problem. It just has to survive another month or so till all the shops get replacement stock and I can buy the better more uptodate one I had on order when COVID struck and everywhere ran out of stock! Whether it is the last update to Windows or to Skype or to Zoom that has initiated this I am not entirely sure, but it is causing an unstable driver

On yesterday evening's call I knew I had heard a snippet from a true live spy book abridged on BBC Radio, not my sort of reading but in light of folks love of such shown last night I made a point of getting the details - Agent Sonya: Moscow's Most Daring Wartime Spy by Ben Macintyre

message 62: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 2155 comments Some of you may know Ann Morgan who writes a blog A Year of Reading the World I came across her as she read a book from each of the world’s countries in 2012. She was on Four Thought on BBCR4 this morning . Not sure whether you can pick this up outside UK but great interview. Lots about books, reading, the challenges of reading internationally and outside your comfort zone. Well worth a listen. She has done TED talks before as well.

message 63: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 8208 comments I’m sorry I missed you all! I had my granddaughter for only about 4 hours yesterday and, unfortunately, it was during the CR time. Looking forward to the topic summary.

Barbara | 8208 comments Reviving this thread to say that I'm sorry I missed the Zoom conversation yesterday! My granddaughter just went back to school this week. I'm picking her up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and she stays with me until her mom gets home from work. Sometimes, that's earlier than others, but yesterday it wasn't. It's a special time for me but it interferes with my special time with my CR friends! Hopefully I'll still be able to make it sometimes.

message 70: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments I'm glad you're getting time with your granddaughter, but we missed you! I hope someone took notes yesterday because there were several interesting recommendations for books and movies/shows.

message 71: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments I’m sorry I missed, too. I had a doc appt for 11:20. Was sure I’d be back in time. But he was running very late, so I wasn’t. :(

message 72: by Donna (new)

Donna (drspoon) | 426 comments I have yet to make a meeting. Seems like it’s always one darn thing or another. But I really enjoy the recaps when they have been included here.

message 73: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments I was a little worried when you weren't there, Ruth, but I'm glad it was just a backed-up doctor's schedule. Hope to see you next month! The next Zoom is on April 13 if you want to add it to your calendar now.

And I hope you are able to find a time to join us, Donna!

message 74: by Mary (new)

Mary D | 77 comments And I missed it too! The last session of a class conflicted...and it really was one o didn’t want to miss. Next time! Have a good month, everyone.

message 75: by Lynn (last edited Mar 17, 2021 04:22PM) (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments Thanks for checking in, Mary. I'm glad to hear you were attending a good class. I really should do something more to improve my mind :)

message 76: by Gina (new)

Gina Whitlock (ginawhitlock) | 2266 comments I thought about it mid-morning, then forgot it until last night. Sorry I missed it.

message 77: by Bella (Kiki) (new)

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) I didn't know you had Zoom meetings. Probably because I'm relatively new. They sound very interesting. Lovely to read about.

Gina, I'm so sorry to read about your daughter's eye surgery and near-blindness. I've had five eye surgeries myself, though I can now see fine. I hope your daughter's sight can be saved. Even if she just sees light, it keeps her from developing non-24 and having her sleep cycles disrupted. It also helps ward off some isolating feelings.

Sending positive energy and best wishes for the best outcome possible.

message 78: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 2155 comments Who was it who recommended Lupin? I just watched the first episode, mist enjoyable will be watching more. Thanks

message 79: by Mary (new)

Mary D | 77 comments I apologize for my very abrupt departure this afternoon. There was a phone call from my father I needed to answer. It was good to see all of you. Have a good month!

message 80: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments No problem, Mary. These things happen. We re glad you came.

message 81: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 8208 comments Zoom conversation correction:. The name of the documentary series I talked about is WORN STORIES, not just Worn.

message 82: by Sue (new)

Sue | 4494 comments Thanks Barbara.
I have to thank many of you for multiple suggestions. I went to Netflix on my iPad and started some 5 or so shows so they will show up in my “currently watching” area when I watch on tv with Roku. So much easier to search on the iPad. I’ll have to try that on Prime. I find searching there really difficult. I get stuck after spelling out what I want. I guess my tech skills haven’t evolved enough for Prime.

But I plan to watch some soon. I loved the opening shots of the dancing birds. And I don’t remember who to thank for that.

message 83: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments Sue, download the Prime Video app and you can search on your iPad. I agree it’s tons easier to do it that way.

message 84: by Sue (new)

Sue | 4494 comments Thanks Ruth. I definitely will do that. The Netflix app was easier too. Lots of great suggestions.

I think someone mentioned Atlantic Crossing on Tuesday. I have now watched the first two episodes and thought they were excellent. I was surprised at how involved I became, and quickly, in these people’s lives. I really care about them. I’m not sure if it’s partly the fact that it’s primarily not in English that adds to the reality.

message 85: by Carol (new)

Carol | 7657 comments When is the next zoom meeting for May?

message 86: by Lynn (new)

message 88: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Dahlstrom | 1340 comments I didn't know which discussion to put this in. For at least a week, I haven't been getting an email with the Digest. I came on Goodreads today and caught up on all the posts I'd missed. My settings seem to be in order for me to get a daily digest of posts. If anyone has insight into why this stopped or what I can do about it, please let me know.

Carol | 7657 comments Lyn , I don’t see the link or zoom room number link. Can you email me the info?

message 90: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Dahlstrom | 1340 comments I think you misunderstood my comment, which is not about Zoom, but about not getting daily digest emails with new posts from Constant Reader (I didn't know where to put it, as no thread seemed perfect)

message 91: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments I think Carol was talking to me (Lynn), not you, Lyn. It's easy to get confused!

Carol, I'll make sure Jane includes you when she sends out the next Zoom link. The link usually goes out a day or two before the meeting. Anyone is welcome to send their email address to Jane to be included, but we don't post the link here because it would be unwieldy if all of our members on GR tried to attend.

Lyn... Is this what you need:

1. Click EDIT MY USER PROFILE

2. In ACCOUNT SETTINGS, click EMAILS

3. Scroll all the way down to GROUP EMAIL PREFERENCES to choose how often you are notified of group posts.

If not, that's all I've got.

Ann D | 3803 comments Lyn, regarding daily digest emails with new posts from Constant Reader:

I no longer get these either. Ken, I checked and I still have the settings marked in my profile. For some time now, I have been experiencing off and on problems with the daily digest emails. I have finally given up and just to to "discussions" and then click on the topics that have posts that are marked "unread."

That’s exactly what I do, Ann. Daily digest emails have been very sporadic.

message 97: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Dahlstrom | 1340 comments Good to know I'm not the only one with not getting the daily digests (my settings are good and were not changed). thanks.

message 98: by Ken (new)

Ken | 447 comments Ohhhh. We're talking about bugs. In that case, throw your hands in the air and talk about the good old days, hoping they'll return, maybe.

message 99: by Sue (new)

Sue | 4494 comments I’ve noticed the same thing. I get notices from some groups but not from others. No rhyme or reason that I can see.

message 100: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne | 1986 comments I’ve noticed some of my Goodreads emails going to my spam folder.
