ABANDONED. YA - Several friends do something involving abandoned mining railroad

I'm pretty sure I read this pre-2000. Possibly by several years. Several friends do something involving an abandoned mining railroad. At one point they want to move one or more of the carts from one place to another, however the railroad has been abandoned for quite some time. One of the larger obstacles is a driveway that was paved over the rails. They attempted to lift the cart onto the driveway and roll it across, however it cut deep grooves in the asphalt. I think they tried to repair this with tar. This part may have taken place at night. I think at one point they ended up posting a public notice under the name of the defunct railroad.

Jason, what's the genre or tone (which we need to add to the topic header) - e.g., YA mystery or adventure?

Are is their goal - e.g., to have fun exploring the mine, look for a specific treasure/valuable in the mine, repair & ride in a railcar?

I don't remember any more details unfortunately. I think they had something they wanted to accomplish that required the use of the cart(s?), probably related to the mine, but try as I might no further details will come to me.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was YA adventure. But, the clearest thing I remember is that driveway, everything else is quite hazy.
