I read this book between 2004 and 2008 so likely published in the early 2000s. Guy has a wedding in a couple days, and while trying to figure if he’s going to go through with it he attempts to ride all the subway lines in New York in a 24 hour period (the subway challenge). A bum riding the train when the guy first gets on ends up being a sounding board and making the journey with him.

*SPOILER*
Guy decides to go through with the wedding and ends up not finishing the challenge but his traveling companion countinues the journey and completes the challenge.
