I know a lot of groups do this already so we hardly need another group BUT... I figure since we do a handful of it per year; this activity deserve its own folder.

I reckon this is a fantastic way to tackle those most daunting books (size or content -wise) and, you can ask anyone else who's done this too, it's great to be able to bounce off ideas & to rant + rave with a friend who's reading it at around the same rate as you.

Feel free to pick your own book, seek your own 'buddy', and post your own thread. :D

Tien and I are already going to do World Without End in Feb/March (and of course would love to have anyone who's interested join us -- see separate thread for that).

I'd also like to find someone to tackle James Joyce's Ulysses with me later in the year. It's not only long but also dense, and I've been afraid of it. Anyone up for it?

I might be up for that! It's on my TBR shelf. Let me know when you're ready to start.

Great, Charity!

We're planning to start the week beginning Monday, Feb. 16. Does that work for you? Check the thread specfically for that, at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... for the specific sections and dates.

Oh I meant for Ulysses...should have copied that part of your comment :-) I didn't read the first one this series or I would join you for World Without End. But when you're ready for Ulysses let me know!

Oh, yay! That's even better. What timing sounds good to you? Not Feb or March, because of the other buddy-read. And probably not November or December because of end-of-year activities. But within that, do some months seem better to you than others?

message 7: by Charity (new)

Charity | 577 comments Well I always tend to have more time in the early-late summer...want to try May or June to start? Then maybe I'll have a good feel for whatever Tien has cooked up for this year's challenge :-) So excited because it will be my first that I knew about at the beginning.

Sounds good! Let's make a more specific plan after Tien unveils her challenge.

I could get hold of John Adams from the library, b ut it's not due back until 6/10. Presuming it is returned on time I would probably get it around the 10th.

Let me know if that's ok and i will book it.

Any time is good for me. I own my copy.

I will order it in. I am presuming the tv series was based on this book ? Very much liked the series.

I'm out, sorry, currently reading Gotham which is similar in topic (US history) so I'd probably get confused! And I'm not far into it so I won't finish it anytime soon either :p

message 14: by Susan (new)

Susan | 3754 comments Mod
I think I'll have to skip this one, too. I'm still struggling through Ulysses.

Not starting either book at present. Maybe in the future. Thanks, all.

I am wondering if anyone will be interested in a read along for The Secret History... I'm seeking a support group because I DNF this book a few years ago and I can't remember why... it could be a matter of timing / mood but who knows!

I'm keen to finish a few 'currently-reading' books that have been there for 3-12 months lol (incl. World Without End) but I hope to get those done in Feb so I'm looking at March (maybe mid March?)

I should be able to get hold of this by March. I am sure I can make it fit with something somewhere.

I enjoy Buddy Reads, keeps me on track, so happy to sign up.

yay! I know I can depend on you, Amanda ;)

How's your daughter doing? Is she looking forward to school? tomorrow?

She doesn't start until Friday. And she is definitely looking forward to it ( as am I! ), mainly because she has some "cool" labels for her books, LOL

Has discovered the joys of graphic novels with the works of Raina Telgemeier, so we are looking at finding some more like that for her.

I recently read Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson. I would recommend this to any girl - middle school and above. Good story about friendship and growing up.

I might join y'all. Let me see how things go during February. I do like Donna Tartt's writings.

Thanks Bea, I will pick it up for her. Or, I should say, I'll get my husband to order it for her as he has put Sisters on order for her at Book Depository, so he can get her both.

Anyone interested in reading together:

Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens

or

The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

start around mid or end June or even beginning of July?

message 24: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments Sorry Tien, I'm not interested in reading either of the books.

I have already read The Name of the Wind and thought it was very good.

message 25: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
No worries, Lusie... I'll see if there are any other takers ;)

Good to know that you enjoyed The Name of the Wind! It's a pretty big book ;p

message 26: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments The second book of the series is very good as well. I love the writing style of the author. It's a shame he doesn't write faster...I hope he writes another book for this series soon.

Tien & Dee,

I just picked up The Name of the Wind from the library to check out. It's huge! Are you thinking 6 weeks at roughly 110 pages per week, or four weeks at roughly 165 pages per week?

Dee,
How does timing work for you when you're reading an audiobook? My library lists it as 28 hours, 13 minutes.

Hence, the request for a buddy read ;p

*coughs* I've just reviewed my challenge worksheets and looks like I actually have to finish this book in June! So err... if we can start on 1st & finish by 30th?

Or... you guys can do 6 weeks, I can read ahead a bit at a time and just make sure I'm not commenting too far ahead :)

Tien wrote: "Susan wrote: "*coughs* I've just reviewed my challenge worksheets and looks like I actually have to finish this book in June! So err... if we can start on 1st & finish by 30th? .."

Starting June 1 and finishing June 30 is good for me.

message 33: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments 28ish hours would make about an hour a day - the book is on 23CD's so that is totally doable for me (assuming I don't get distracted)

message 34: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments if we could figure out chapters rather than pages it would be easier

I'll take a stab at that.

message 36: by Susan (new)

Susan | 3754 comments Mod
The chapters are very short, which makes it easy.
How does this look, ladies?

I thought it might make sense to put the odd number of days at the beginning, then to go with Sat-Fri as our weeks. But we can certainly change it if someone has a better idea.

June 1-2 45 pages Prologue, Chs 1-6 (p. 48)
June 3-9 154 Chs 7-31 (-p. 204)
June 10-16 154 Chs 32-53 (-p. 255)
June 17-23 154 Chs 54-71 (-p. 505)
June 24-30 154 Chs 72-Epilogue (-p.662)

message 37: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments works for me - otherwise I was goingto have to do math to figure out page points to time on CD

Shall we start a separate thread for this particular read? :)

Yes, 355. Thanks for catching that.

A separate thread is a probably good idea. That way anyone else who decides they want to join us can spot it easily.
