But Martin was it that the money and the paid for Spencer - Roberts was necessary for Reagan to even be willing to take the risk to run.
I think after the "landslide" loss of Goldwater the Republicans wanted someone they thought could win - even if it was just California for now -and they found a way to make a path that Reagan could/would follow with a script that he could use.
