So three murder mysteries with parties incapable of finding the killers so far. I'm not really getting drawn into any of the storylines or characters. I really wish some of the secondary characters were more fleshed out.I like the reveal in Kaden's storyline about the Shin which shows us why he is there.
Valyn's section is the best for me so far but wish they would show more of his training. The three instances where they showed it were dissapointing because he passed out during all of them.
Adare's sections are the most dissapointing for me because I feel like they would be a good way to show the structure of the empire and how the religions play into it but everything has been vague.
Assuming Adare is the sister, I always felt like her character was underused.
I don't really remember how quickly the book grabbed me. I do recall finding it slow in places. He does a lot of setup in this book.
The book really gets good when things start to converge.

Yeah I figured there is a convergence coming at some point. My comments seem pretty negative so far but I am kind of neutral at this point. I'm pretty patient as long as the pace isn't a complete crawl.
I am enjoying the pacing. I think it's pretty obvious Annick is being set up, my theory is that she was having a romantic relationship or was in love with the prostitute that was murdered. I really enjoyed the last chapter with Adare and the trial and the political intrigue...She seems to pop in for a chapter ever 10 or so, so I am thinking the political intrigue will only play a backdrop to Kaden and Valyn's stories.
So far we think something spider-like is killing goats and mountain lions but we haven't seen any plot to kill Kaden. I assume at some point the plots converge and we see how it relates.
The reveal on the true nature of the Shins was interesting. Perhaps since the imperial family is responsible for guarding the gates, and the Intarran priest is involved in the conspiracy/plot against the imperial family, they are trying to bring back the Csestriim?
The training episodes are short...yeah its funny he passes out at each. The rivalry with the nobleman's son and the leach are entertaining though.
I was thinking the same about Annick.I don't see the point in the Intarran priest bringing back the Csestriim as they would just kill him. I never understand when the villans bring back the dead or frees some super powerful being so they can take over the world and the villan can be number 1 lackey.
