Michael Stewart (michaelfstewart) | 26 comments Flashforward by Robert Sawyer has been serialized for TV. You can check out the first 17 minutes over here:

http://abc.go.com/shows/flash-forward

It's worth a watch. I know this is more Scifi - but so's Torchwood!

message 2: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I am looking forward to watching it - it's already set in my dvr! I am going to be reading the book as soon as I get a chance.

message 3: by Michael (new)

Michael Stewart (michaelfstewart) | 26 comments I like how they set this up. It's a completely different point of view then the book. They've made it a lot more immediate.

message 4: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I noticed that too. When I read the synopsis to the book I noticed they jumped forward 21 years instead of 6 months or so from the tv show. I think if the show did the 21 years, it would seem boring maybe?

I'm not usually a fan of tv shows that are based on books that I've read so I'm glad I'll watch the show before I read the book. I might enjoy it that way. lol

Michael Stewart (michaelfstewart) | 26 comments Not to disappoint, but I think I already like the TV show better and I haven't even seen more than the extended trailer! The book is interesting but there's a bit too much science in the fiction if you know what I mean? This looks more character driven.

I hadn't caught the time differential. Again, though, I think likely a good thing.

message 6: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Yea I guess it depends on what type of book you're reading whether the show is better or not. The Dresden Files probably would have been a much better show had they used better special effects. lol
And I get what you're saying about "too much science in the fiction"...I'm having the same issue with the Weather Warden first book, Ill Wind. Too much forecasting lol.

I missed it but if it's anything like Torchwood I'm going to love it!

message 8: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments I quite liked what they showed on tv last night as well as liking the novel when I read it some years ago.

It's more like Lost I believe, rather than Torchwood. (It made me smile to see a billboard advertising Oceanic Airways in one scene.) Flashforward has a large ensemble cast, with many story lines going at one time.

I heard an interview that Robert J. Sawyer did with CBC a few days ago. The tv producers are consciously playing down the science fiction in the novel, which makes him a little crazy, but hey, getting paid for what he wrote, isn't terrible.

Bill (reedye) | 46 comments I take it this has already shown in the US. How far ahead are you? First episode shows UK on Monday.

message 10: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Just the one episode (first one) has aired.

message 11: by Bill (new)

Bill (reedye) | 46 comments Thanks Julia. For a change, we're not too far behind then.

message 12: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) LOL I have noticed that shows come out in the UK usually months after the US. I wouldn't be able to handle that...especially being on the internet. It would be so easy to find out what happens! lol

I will be watching Flashforward this weekend. I had to record it because I was watching Bones! lol

Shomeret | 233 comments I was underwhelmed by the first episode. I'm a concept person, so perhaps I'll like the book better. I put Sawyer's book Flashforward on hold and expect to pick it up on Tuesday. I read science fiction. I'm happy to see science in my fiction so long as it's also a novel with plot and characterization. I've read two other books by Sawyer and think that he writes well. I also think that I might appreciate the series better once I've evaluated the novel's concept.

Melodie (melodieco) I had planned on watching this show, but it's on the same time as Bones. I read some stuff about it that made me think it might be a little like Lost, so decided to pass. I watched some of Lost the first season it was on and it ended up driving me up the wall! Never any answers, just more questions. My husband stuck with through the 2nd season and then gave up on it, too.

message 15: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I like Lost. I loved the mystery of it all.
I watched Flashforward today. I thought it was good. I know it's definitely going to take the spot on my dvr from Vampire Diaries.

message 16: by Starling (new)

Starling | 153 comments I watched the first episode, and very much enjoyed it. I think that, like LOST, this is going to be a series with a specific story line. I've never read the book and know nothing about it. I see they've already made one very big change, the amount of time between now and the flash foward date. I wouldn't have problems with that even if I had read the book because I tend to see book/media production as two separate universes.

At this point, I'm in the same situation Elvia is in. I've taken Vampire Diaries off the DVR and put Flashfoward on.

Vampire Diaries comes on the same time as Fringe & CSI here, Fringe goes on one DVR and Vampire Diaries on the other.

message 18: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Flashforward is on with Bones and Vamp Diaries. I only have the one dvr and the other tv is wher hubby is forced to watch espn so I can only record one show and watch the other...sucks. lol

message 19: by Starling (new)

Starling | 153 comments Some shows are also available on the web. I don't know if Flashforward will be, but I think Vampire Diaries will, or is. I've found a couple of places, including a CW web site where you can watch the program legally.

I've done this in the past, legally, with a show were I had conflicts. I just picked the program that wasn't doing as well as the others and sure enough the network showing it was offering it on computer.

message 20: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I don't have the internet at home and trying to watch sites like hulu on my phone hurts the eyes after awhile lol. I did hear/read that Vamp Diaries was available for viewing online, though.

message 21: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca I don't know that it will happen every week, but last week they repeated "Flashforward" on Friday night.

message 22: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I did see that. Thats probaly only until their other shows start...I know there are some shows not starting til mid-October, November. And Lost doesn't start til January I think.

message 23: by Starling (new)

Starling | 153 comments I think that Flashforward needs to build an audience early on because as a continuing story no one will be able to understand what is going on without it.

LOST did a bunch of "this is the story so far" episodes the last couple of years to get people on board. There are some shows where you have to watch in order as well.

message 24: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) That is very true Starling. Hopefully enough people were watching (I don't know the ratings for the series premiere) so as not to be too confused.
I know I missed a few episodes of Lost and was greatful for those episodes detailing what was going on.

message 25: by Starling (new)

Starling | 153 comments Is anyone watching this second set of programs? I am, and I'm enjoying them. Want to talk about it?

message 26: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Not me. I've decided to watch other things, or read.

The Romance Reviews (Carole) (The_Romance_Reviews) | 8 comments The first few episodes were good, but I'm afraid to say, I got bored somewhere in the middle. I'm afraid I also don't much care about the characters and so, when I'm not invested enough, it's easy to stop watching.

Didn't realize it was a book first though.

Amber (unchangeling) | 23 comments I know it's gone now, but I loved, loved, loved this show. Can't wait to watch it all again on DVD!
