Shereesa | 7 comments I think I read this about 4 - 8 years ago and it's somewhat modern, so I'm guessing 1990 - 2000s.

Contemporary romance - HEA style.

The heroine moves back to her hometown (don't recall why) and moves into an old house. There's furniture in the attic and she's excited she can refinish it to make money. I don't think refinishing furniture is her true profession, but maybe a hobby to make money? She might have been an actress but not doing very well or needed to come home for family?

The hero is in law enforcement (sheriff?) and I think he lives next door. I don't remember if they knew each other in high school or if he's newer to the area. I think it's a small town, too.

One part of the story I remember - the heroine goes to dinner with an old high school classmate who's a realtor. After dinner he takes her to a place on the main street in town to show her a property she might like that's for sale. The former owner left all their woodworking-type tools which are included in the sale and she's excited about the space and tools.

The guy starts acting like a jerk and expects her to put out, but she refuses and he pushes/shoves her into the wall where there are tools. She's hurt (head cut & bleeding?) and the guy leaves her there telling her she can find her own way home. She walks home injured.

The hero sees her walking and helps her. He finds out what happened and goes to see the realtor guy the next day at his office. He beats him up and threatens him for what he did. I don't think the hero's actions come back to bite him, either.

Those are all the details I can remember.

The story reminds me of Brand New Heartache by Maggie Shayne and I keep mixing some details of the two stories together.
