Bệnh đa hồng cầu thận (hay ARPKD hoặc thận đa nang ở trẻ sơ sinh) : đây là một bệnh thoái hóa tự phát, do đó hiếm hơn (nhưng cũng nghiêm trọng hơn nhiều) so với thận đa nang, vì nó xảy ra ở thai nhi, trẻ sơ sinh, trẻ nhỏ.
Các gen bị đột biến là của fibrocystin , một loại protein ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển của các ống mật (cấu trúc trong đó gan đổ mật) và ống dẫn của người thu gom (thành phần cuối cùng của nephron).
Suy thận mãn tính xảy ra trong cuộc sống trong tử cung, khi sinh hoặc thời thơ ấu. Ở dạng chu sinh, trẻ chết vài ngày hoặc vài tuần sau khi sinh, nếu không được thở máy (có liên quan đến giảm sản phổi) và lọc máu hoặc ghép.
Nguồn gốc của các u nang thận này thường là do di truyền: dạng chiếm ưu thế thường xuyên hơn
Trên thực tế, một bệnh nhân mắc phải dạng Polycystosis này chắc chắn có những người thân khác bị ảnh hưởng bởi căn bệnh tương tự.
Dạng lặn có tỷ lệ mắc thấp hơn, cả về tỷ lệ tử vong ở trẻ sơ sinh cao và do gen, bị thoái hóa, có thể xuất hiện ở những người mang mầm bệnh khỏe mạnh mà không gây ra bệnh rõ ràng.
