This book is being made into the movie Seventh Son which is due out February 6th. I always like to read the book before seeing the movie, so I can compare. Looking on IMDB, however, I can already tell they are going to be seriously messing with the book. For instance, the main character in the book is only 13, and the actor who plays him is 33 years old! Also, in the preview I saw, it looks like some dragons may be in the movie, but I saw none in the book. So, it might be quite a different animal once I see the movie. Depending on the reviews, it is possible I might see the movie when it comes to video, and check it out of the library.

As to the book, it is a level aimed at tweens, but it has a dark, scary side. Joseph Delany writes pretty gruesome, and makes you want to have the lights on in a few sections. Told in first person narrative, the reader is brought into the story with the same awe at each new encounter as the main character Tom Ward. It is a quick read, as the font is spaced little further than you would find in an adult aimed book, but the language is such that you do not feel you are being talked down to at any point. Some larger words are actually defined in a clever way by having Tom not understand them, and his mentor the Spook defining it for him.

All in all, I would recommend this book for those who want a nice quick read to enjoy and if you are planning on seeing the movie when it comes out in February.
