And the thing that I don't understand is that we have many sorts of discussions: books, games, fun chats and all but no one participates... except for the polls 😅

Like, you create a character and pretend to be them. Like you would make up their name, looks, personality, etc. And then you would create a setting for them to mingle in. Maybe some new villain has captured somebody. idk
