This is Mohammed writing this, ignore the other name. The second mentor text I used was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Even though I am writing the first book of a series, I chose this over the other books in the series for three reasons. First, it uses magic, something that I studied closely when reading the series. I studied how they were described as the spells were being used in the books, how they created certain problems and removed other problems, and how the “rules of the world” were applied to keep consistency as the novel continued. Second, that was the third and largest large scale magic battle in the series, something I really wanted to study. I wanted to see how a battle full of people casting different colored spells with different incantations and effects were able to be used without frying the mind of the poor reader trying to keep track of the fight. I was able to really get a grasp on how to use the spells in battle without losing clarity or interest. In fact, I think I have about twenty notecards full of ideas to use in all the future battles I will undoubtedly end of writing. Third, I wanted to learn how to kill off beloved characters. Just kidding, the third thing I wanted to learn from the story is chronology. Deathly Hallows is amazing at having months pass by without seeming abrupt or unnatural. It skips boring parts full of them hiding in various places (sorry for the spoiler) and gets to the pivotal parts that truly affect the story without sacrificing information or transitions.
